Dahlias originate from Mexico and Guatemala where they produce single flowers. Enthusiasts in Europe in the 18th century bred many different forms, which now produce blooms that range from 5cm to 30cm (2in to 12in) in diameter. 'Weston Spanish Dancer' is a lovely cactus-flowered dahlia, with spiky, quilled petals. This cultivar produces elegant bi-coloured flowers that have yellow petals with bright red tips. As with most dahlias, they need a sunny position with free-draining soil. Dahlias are half hardy and after flowering, the tubers should be lifted and stored in a frost-free place, replanting after all frosts have finished. However, in frost-free areas, tubers can be left in the ground. They benefit from regular propagation to maintain vigour.
