Originating from Chile, this exotic looking plant forms attractive rosettes of spiny, tough foliage. The leaves are green on the surface and pale brown beneath, the innermost leaves are usually brightly coloured as plant prepare to flower. Mature plants produce flowers from the centre of the rosette in summer. It is frost-tender needing a well-drained, sheltered spot to survive. Protect plants from winter wet by covering them with a sheet of glass.
