Eucomis takes its common name of pineapple flower from the unusual appearance of its flower. The species autumnalis produces a long thin flower spike topped with a small rosette of leaves. Their exotic appearance makes all eucomis ideal for subtropical plantings. Plants are quite tender and will only withstand the winter outside in very sheltered spots. It is usually grown in a large pot and then planted out or stood in the border during the summer months. Keep plants well watered during the summer months and dry off during the winter. New plants can be propagated by removing offsets from the parent bulbs in the spring.
