A perennial plant, native in a wide range of grasslands. It does not like acidic soils. Because members of this family fix nitrogen from the air into the soil it is quite common for farmers to sow a clover such as Trifolium pratense var. sativum into stubble as a short term ley to improve the soil's fertility.
