Include a 'jewel' in your garden design
Jewels
One thing any small garden needs is a special feature to discover on your trip round the garden or to act as a focal point.

Some of the very best are small water features. They are little jewels.

A chunky piece of rock with water running over it back into a pebble fountain looks just right in a natural style garden or surrounded by paving and some striking planting, and it’s 100% child friendly.

A wall-mounted fountain is perfect for a patio, adding atmosphere without taking up space you might need for anything else. You could put a lean-to pergola over the top for a Mediterranean touch. In a shady corner a feature like this adds light and sparkle, though you may find the sound of running water sends visitors off to the loo.

No matter how big a water gardening fan you are, resist the temptation to put a very large and elaborate water feature in a small garden. It’s altogether overpowering. Stick to the little jewels and you can’t go wrong.
