Handful of mulch

Mulching plants

Follow our guide to mulching, an essential garden technique.

What to do

A layer of mulch provides nutrients to plants, keeps in moisture, it forms a barrier against weeds and can help to insulate the roots of vulnerable plants from winter cold. Mulch can refer to a variety of material, from well-rotted manure to gravel.

  • After planting trees, shrubs or perennials in autumn, water the soil well and spread a 5cm (2in) deep ring of mulch over the root area.
  • Rake level and ensure you leave a little gap around the stems of plants. Cover tender bulbs or perennials, such as Verbena bonariensis with a mulch in late autumn to protect from winter cold.
  • Entire beds are best mulched in spring. Fill a wheelbarrow with your mulch and spread over damp soil with a spade. Level with a rake.
