Dividing plant

Dividing perennials

Dividing plants will keep them healthy and strong and is a good way to control growth. It's also a great way to get new plants for free.

What to do

  • In early spring or autumn, lift plants, taking care not to damage the root system.
  • Divide each plant into several portions by gently pulling them away from the main plant.
  • Discard the old, woody centre of each plant.
  • Dig over the original site as necessary and replant the divisions, leaving enough space between each of the plants to develop.
  • Plants can also be planted in a new position to increase your stock.
