Seedhead

Collecting seeds

Every year many of our garden plants set masses of ripe seed. With the minimum of care, home-saved seed offers an easy method of propagation and an ideal way of raising large numbers of plants, absolutely free!

What to do

  • Choose a dry, windless day and select plants where the seedheads appear to be about to open.
  • Place the paper bag over the dead seedhead and cut seedhead stalk, upturning it into the bag.
  • Close bag without crushing seedhead and label it.
  • Place bag in a dry place.
  • Check the bag for when the seeds have been released.
  • Remove the contents of the bag separating the seeds from any bits of seedhead still attached.
  • Place seeds in a clean paper bag or envelope, label and store in a cool, dry, airy place until ready to be used.
