Design a window box

Revamp a dull windowsill with a combination of flowering and foliage plants.

Choose reliable perennials and annual flowers, for a colourful, year-round display.

What to do

  • Measure your windowsill before buying a window box to make sure it will fit comfortably. Cover drainage holes in box with a layer of broken pot shards or broken up polystyrene packaging.
  • Fill container with compost to the bottom of your largest pot.
  • Arrange plants, while still in their pots, taking into account structure, foliage texture and colour, and when you're happy with the combination, knock them out of their pots and plant.
  • Fill in gaps with compost and firm down.
  • Finish by watering.
