Container gardening

Plant up a container

Transform a dull corner by filling a container with colourful shrubs or flowering perennials.

What to do

  • Plant up pots for a striking, year-round display. You can grow showy shrubs, flowering perennials or a mixture of both in pots.
  • Follow our easy guide to making the most of your containers.
  • Choose your planting combination. An architectural shrub such as a cordyline with annuals that can be changed seasonally is a good way of adding structure and colour.
  • Cover the drainage hole in your container with a layer of broken terracotta pot.
  • Fill with compost to the level of the base of your largest pot.
  • Arrange plants in container.
  • When you're happy with the combination, plant and fill in gaps with compost. Firm and finish by watering well.
