Make a mini alpine garden

Follow our advice for creating a fantastic year-round display in a stone trough.

What to do

  • Cover drainage holes at bottom of the trough with a layer of broken pot.
  • Fill with compost to 12.5cm (5in) of the rim.
  • Arrange plants, putting taller plants at the back and trailers at the front.
  • Plant by starting at one corner and working across the trough. Fill in gaps with compost and firm.
  • Finish by adding a carpet of grit over the surface.
  • Tip: If using a heavy stone trough, plant it up where you want it to stand permanently.
