Make a mini alpine garden
Follow our advice for creating a fantastic year-round display in a stone trough.
What to do
Cover drainage holes at bottom of the trough with a layer of broken pot.
Fill with compost to 12.5cm (5in) of the rim.
Arrange plants, putting taller plants at the back and trailers at the front.
Plant by starting at one corner and working across the trough. Fill in gaps with compost and firm.
Finish by adding a carpet of grit over the surface.
Tip: If using a heavy stone trough, plant it up where you want it to stand permanently.
