How to harvest apples

If you store your apples properly, you'll be able to enjoy them throughout the winter. Autumn is the time for harvesting apples as they need to be picked and stored before the first frosts.

What to do

  • From September onwards, pick apples when they're ripe and can be plucked from the tree by simply placing a cupped hand under the fruit, lifting and gently twisting.
  • Take a good look at each apple and give each one a quick clean with a cloth.
  • Slight insect damage on the skin is harmless, but don't store any bruised fruit as they'll rot and infect others.
  • Wrap the apples in newspaper, and sit them on a seed tray or shelf.
