Growing gooseberries

Gooseberries are easy to grow and one of the earliest fruits of the year. Follow our guide to growing your own.

What to do

  • Prepare soil in autumn by forking over a large area and removing weeds.
  • Dig a planting hole and fork in compost or well-rotted manure.
  • Add pelleted general purpose fertiliser.
  • Space cordons 30-45cm apart and bushes at least 1.2m.
  • Keep well watered until established and mulch thickly.
  • Net during June and July to protect fruit from birds.
