Plant a currant bush and you’ll soon be picking lots of plump berries. White, red and blackcurrants are perfect for a sunny or slightly shaded spot, and once established are really easy to look after.
What to do
Dig a hole. It should be wide enough for the roots to be spread out and deep enough so the soil mark on the stem is level with the surface of the soil.
Put the bush in the centre of the hole and gradually fill with soil, firming as you go.
Water and spread a layer of well-rotted manure over the soil.
After planting red and white currants, pull off any suckers growing from the ground and remove branches to leave 10cm of clear stem at the base.
Prune all other branches by two thirds, cutting to an outward facing bud.
After planting blackcurrants, prune all branches, leaving two buds above the ground.
