Chicory

How to grow chicory

This bitter leaved salad plant is really easy to grow in the soil, raised beds or pots. Sow seed in early summer and you’ll have lots of tasty pickings from autumn to early winter. Here’s how.

What to do

  • Chicory likes a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
  • Prepare soil the winter before sowing, digging well and adding plenty of well-rotted manure.
  • A week before sowing, sprinkle a general purpose fertiliser over the soil and rake in.
  • Sow seeds between July and August. Make a shallow, 1cm (0.5in) deep, trench with a garden cane and sow seeds thinly along its length. Cover, water and label.
  • When seeds are about 2cm (1in) high, thin out to leave plants every 15cm (6in).
