Nigel Slater

Week one

Nigel Slater met models, actors and fellow foodies to learn about the dishes that have shaped their lives.

Friday 30 May

Nigel Slater and Sanjeev Bhaskar

Comic actor Sanjeev Bhaskar reminisced about the contrast between bland school dinners and the Indian food he was served at home. He told us how he met his wife, comedienne Meera Syal, and what she's like in the kitchen.

Sanjeev's fictional mum and dad from the Kumars at No. 42 rustled up some interesting dishes, and he was taken down memory lane by some college chums, who challenged him to make an entire menu from a Chinese takeaway.

Thursday 29 May

Tamsin Greig

Star of Green Wing and Love Soup Tamsin Greig remembered her dad's 'experimental' cooking style and told Nigel she hates talking about food at dinner parties. Her friend Charles Collingwood, who plays Brian in The Archers, challenged Tamsin and Nigel to make jam doughnuts - but cooking them descended into farce.

Tamsin's co-star and friend from Green Wing Stephen Mangan shared some uncomfortable secrets, and asked her to 'cook something with ham'.

Wednesday 28 May

Sophie Dahl

Supermodel-turned writer Sophie Dahl told Nigel how she was discovered in a chance meeting with stylist Isabella Blow, and explained her relationship with food while working as a model. Her brother Luke sent an affectionate message from their grandfather's home, while cooking a childhood favourite created by Roald Dahl.

Tuesday 27 May

Nigella Lawson

Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson told us her life story through food. Her children helped to make a pasta dish and Nigella's friend, historian Simon Schama, cooked her a venison stew - and wondered why Nigella never cooks for him.

Nigel and Nigella went into the kitchen to recreate the Jam roly-poly that Nigella used to make for her mum, then Nigella scoffed a record number of chocolate profiteroles in record time.

Monday 26 May

Jane Horrocks

Star of Little Voice and The Amazing Mrs Pritchard, Jane Horrocks, was taken on a culinary trip back in time, via the tripe she used to have at her nan's. Faced with the same dish of tripe and vinegar again, neither Nigel nor Jane could see, smell or taste the appeal.

Jane's husband cooked up their favourite family stew, then for dessert, Jane's pal Giorgio Locatelli rustled up a tiramisu.
