Julia Sawalha

Cookery writer Nigel Slater took a trip with Julia Sawalha through the tastes of her childhood.

Nigel Slater meets actress Julia Sawalha, who relived her childhood food memories - many of which had an irresistible Middle Eastern flavour. One of her best-remembered dishes was a comforting chicken pie that her mum made for Julia and her sisters when her father was away on business.

Julia's sisters Dina and Nadia joined Nigel and Julia to recreate a big pink birthday cake covered in meringue, a much-loved childhood treat. Julia's best friend recalled how they used to simmer baked beans with tomato sauce and butter to make their favourite comfort food during their teenage years.

Recipes from the show

With the help of Nigel, Julia prepared a Middle Eastern feast as her ideal 'last supper' and discussed who she'd invite for the final feast. You can try the recipes yourself:
