Nigel Slater and Alan Bennett

Alan Bennett

Cookery writer Nigel Slater met playwright Alan Bennett for a look back in hunger at his life and appetites.

Alan Bennett

In this rare television appearance by the celebrated playwright, Alan Bennett, Nigel uncovered some of Alan’s most intimate culinary memories. Alan discussed his constant fear of eating out in public, which he believes stems from his mother’s insistence on smuggling their own bread and butter into the local fish and chip shop.

Actress and close friend Patricia Routledge rustled up a snack of whitebait and a Florida cocktail. Later, Alan shared his experiences of discovering eating out with Dudley Moore, and revealed how he felt terribly sophisticated when he discovered how to eat a globe artichoke in the correct way. Alan also talked candidly about his battle with cancer and his regrets that he hasn’t seen more of the world.
