Daksha

Daksha

Daksha Mistry, one of the finalists of MasterChef 2006, hopes to use her success to put Gujarati food firmly on the map. BBC Food spoke to Daksha about her life since the series ended.

On Friday 17 March the MasterChef of 2006 was announced to the nation. Daksha Mistry didn't quite make it to the title, but that hasn't stopped her from setting up her own catering business.

Tuesday 25 April 2006, London: "Straight after the finals in March people stopped me to ask if I really was Daksha. Then suddenly before I knew it, I was surrounded by large crowds. Everyone was very kind and said how I made the show exciting and funny – and sad on occasions! People have been asking me when I intend on opening my own restaurant and how they would love to come.

"I approached John Williams, executive chef at The Ritz, to get work experience and I started this month which is fantastic. I'm also setting up my own catering business specialising in fine Indian dining.

"I've done three radio interviews with BBC Asian Network. They have said they'd like to invite me back to talk more about food in general. I've also been writing to television production companies to see if I can appear on TV and show off Gujarati-style cooking.

"My main aim is to get my own television show. I would love to present a cooking show some time in the future."
