The Hairy Bikers in Vietnam

Series two

The unlikely Northern duo rounded off their second series in Mexico.

Episode six - Mexico

Mayan stew

In the last of the series the boys were invited to a Mayan village to cook a traditional Mayan stew. It's a triumph - mainly because the diminutive local women elbow the big boys aside and take over! Next they headed off to climb a cliff to make Mexican hot chocolate and the world's finest chocolate pudding.

The pair ended up at Palenque where they paused to reflect on the miles they'd driven this year, and all the amazing people and food they'd discovered.

Episode five - Mexico

Refried beans

In the old colonial town of Oaxaca Si and Dave loaded up on Garlic-fried crickets, 300 types of chillies, Tamales and fresh Tacos.

Next they took over the bandstand in the town's central square and rustled up a feast of Tetelas - refried beans and guacamole - before cooking up a dish of Chicken in mole negro, the fabled Oaxacan chocolate-based spicy sauce.

Episode four - Turkey

Chicken liver and almond pilaf

Biking in Turkey is no picnic, especially when the road runs along the borders of Syria, Iraq and Iran. But in between dodging the oil tankers and military convoys, Si and Dave got down to more serious matters, such as building their very own Doner kebab (sheep's tail fat is an essential ingredient).

After their kebab it was time for a relaxing but rough massage in the hammam before they headed off to the strange town of Van. Here they found bizarre cats, gargantuan breakfasts, and (allegedly) a prehistoric monster in the lake. Or was it just the local hallucinogenic honey starting to work?

Episode three - Turkey

Sultan's delight with creamed aubergine

Si and Dave headed inland to find the 'real' Turkey and taste the legacy of the incomparable Ottoman cuisine. Their travels took them on to Cappadocia, where they cooked a mouth-watering meze in one of the world's most bizarre landscapes. Along the way they tasted a curiously elastic ice cream and Turkey's 'greatest baklava maker' let them in on his secrets.

Finally they reached Sanliurfa, just north of Syria, where they treated the locals to ‘Sultan's delight’ cooked on a rooftop.

Episode two - Vietnam

Si and Dave continued their travels in Vietnam with a visit to the Emperor's palace in Hue where Dave cooked Paddy-field pork, Spring rolls and Sticky rice during a monsoon. Then it's on to Hanoi to sample the two extremes of Vietnamese cuisine: French super-chef Didier's mouth-watering buffet, and a local bar's own street-food surprise (Si thinks they're eating duck, Dave thinks it's suckling pig - both are wrong).

Ha long crab and white fish vermicelli soup with rao ram herb

Their final destination was the stunning Ha Long Bay, to grill Cha ca fish and make Crab and fish soup on a junk.

Episode one - Vietnam

Si and Dave visited Vietnam to recreate some dubious-sounding dishes including Deep-fried scorpions, Coconut worms, and a part of a goat that wouldn't make it onto most menus.

Shrimp and pork on sugar cane

A more appetising dish of Shrimp and pork on sugar cane was cooked during a frenzied ferry landing. Biking on up the coast they discovered the delicious national dish of Pho, and enjoy Crispy Hue pancakes cooked in the street below the mysterious Cham towers.
