The Hairy Bikers in Namibia

Series one

Try the recipes from The Hairy Bikers' first series.

Romania

Mititei

This week Si and Dave remained in Romania to explore the Hungarian influence on the local food and to cook Chicken paprika. Then they turned their bikes north and headed towards the Ukranian border where they made Mititei (spicy Romanian sausages).

Their recipe for Chicken paprika is perfect for a warming dinner on a cold evening.

Transylvania

Pork sarmale

Doing their best to discover whether Transylvania really is all rare meat and garlic, Si and Dave travelled through Romania by motorbike on a quest for great food. First stop was one of Bucharest's vibrant markets. Then they headed off to cook local sweet pancakes and to enjoy the hearty family fare of Pork sarmale - or stuffed cabbage leaves to you and me.

The boys' recipe for Langosi (sweet pancakes with hazelnut cream) will make a great Shrove Tuesday dessert with a difference.

Ireland

Oyster Po'boys

This week the boys got to sample the fruits of the Carlingford oyster beds and to try the dubious delights of the Enniscrone seawater baths. Throughout their journey, one quest remained: the secret of the perfect Irish stew. Before the final cook-off, there was plenty of advice on offer from top chef Neven Maguire to members of Ireland's travelling community and even the patrons of Flukie's Cosy Bar.

Try their idea of the perfect Irish stew.

Isle of Man

Crab

For Si and Dave, the chance to combine a trip to the annual TT Races in the Isle of Man with some tasty cooking was irresistible. They spent a happy afternoon cooking crab soufflés and sea bass on the back of the boat, only to wake up the next morning in the teeth of a gale.

Try their crab souffles or tequila-flambeed scallops - cooking them on a boat is optional!

Northern Namibia

Bobotie

This week Si and Dave explored more of Namibia and set off on a remarkable expedition to the very north of the country. They went in search of the Himba tribe, one of the last nomadic people to fully preserve their traditional way of life. The journey included close encounters with ostrich (and a giant fried egg for breakfast), giraffe, and the rare desert elephants of Kaokoland. Along the way they roasted lamb in an earth pit and ended their Namibian adventure with a traditional bobotie cooked for the Himba tribe.

Try the hearty Bobotie, or if you're feeling adventurous, you can try digging a pit and roasting lamb the Hairy Bikers' way!

Namibia

Crocodile satay

First on the menu is a traditional barbeque, or braai. To find the right spot among the massive dunes to get cooking, the boys took to the air in a microlight. After gorging themselves on Si's crocodile satay and Dave's oryx rolls, they explored the contrasting delights of a Bavarian café and a township shebeen, before being treated to their first taste of a mopane worm. Tastier local fare was on offer in the shape of the delicious local crayfish, wrestled from the ocean despite the worst-fitting wetsuits of all time, before being cooked in rock salt and served with asparagus rice. A chance meeting with a local guide promised an interesting quest ahead.

We've adapted the hairy duo's Namibian recipes for the home cook - outdoor fire not required!
