Following the huge success of the first competition in 2004, we were inundated with almost 700 entries from across the country for Sports Shorts 2 in 2005.
The most popular sport was once again Football, but we also received lots of stories about Cricket, Rugby, Tennis, Boxing, the Olympics, Golf, Horse Racing and school ‘Sports Day’, along with other more unusual sports.
The judges included actor Ralf Little, writer Tony Jordan, writer/producer Hardeep Singh Kohli, athlete Denise Lewis, and Five Live’s Nicky Campbell.
We are delighted to announce that the overall winner of the Sports Shorts 2 competition is:
'The Match' by Mark Kotting.
Six other highly recommended entries are:
Look What You Could Have Won by Anthony Bryan;
Skinny Barlow by Boff Whalley;
Doing My Bit by Ian Watson;
A Game of Two Halves by Valerie Fry;
Love Game by Malcolm Stamp;
Playing Away by Lisette Powell;
Five of these seven will be produced for broadcast on Five Live.
Of the winner, Kate Rowland commented: "Startling and original. I've never read anything like it in my life."
Here is what the judges thought of the overall shortlist:
Hardeep Singh Kholi
"The breadth and variety of writing was astonishing. It's amazing the stories that are trapped inside people's heads."
Denise Lewis
"Amazing. There was lots of passion coming through. The scripts read really well and showed depths of talent."
Tony Jordon
"I am astounded by the quality of the writing. There are some very funny, and very sick, people out there."
Writersroom is also pleased to announce that BBC local radio stations are keen to produce a selection of entries from writers in their regions.
