We were inundated with questions for Army Of Darkness star Bruce Campbell. Read on for Bruce's thoughts on action figures, guns, and why he'd run away from a real-life fight...
Is there any truth to the rumour that you will be starring in the upcoming Spider-Man 2 Jason Teale
Um, no, and the best thing to always keep your eyes on is my website [Bruce-campbell.com], because I have my website for that reason. If you go to my website and you don't see it, that means it can't be substantiated. So it's a pretty simple equation. Unfortunately once certain information outlets get it wrong, it goes everywhere - like the Internet Movie Database. You can't always count on it, you gotta check your sources.
What's the best thing you have ever stolen from a set? Dylan Todd
A cool prop from a movie called Sundown: The Vampire In Retreat. It was a very cool Van Helsing holy water bottle. I have a shelf in my office where I put all these strange things that I've collected.
What do you look for in a script - what gets your attention and makes you say I really want to play THIS part in THIS movie? Kevin Redfern
It's a whole series of factors. First of all it's script and story, what sort of characters have they created, what sort of dialogue is going on, who's behind it, who's directing it, producing it, how long is it going to take to make it, where are they shooting it? It's really quite a lot. Mainly these days I'm trying to avoid first-time directors. I just think there's no point everyone going through school all over again.
Having watched the exploits of Ash through the ages, his hardline approach to the enemy, lack of ego, immense brainpower, his pure selflessness and his leadership qualities, only one question remains... Have you considered running for President? Marcus Alexander
Maybe in 2008. I'm weighing options right now - I've formed an exploratory committee.
Did you ever get badly hurt doing the Evil Dead movies? Some of the things you did looked pretty painful. Michelle Waghorn
Not enough to stop filming. I did get injured briefly. My wife was costume designer on Army Of Darkness and she was mad at me so she designed a breastplate that would jam into my face whenever I bent over. I flipped a stuntman and it cut my face open and I went to the emergency room and the doctor didn't know which cut to repair, because as Ash I had about six cuts on my face. So, I had to point out which one it was and he stitched me up and we went back to shooting, because what's the difference? Nine cuts, ten cuts... It didn't matter. With a Sam Raimi movie there's no good excuse to stop shooting.
Which of the two alternative endings to Army Of Darkness did you personally prefer? Tanya Jackson
I prefer the original one, the one where Ash miscalculates, sleeps too long and the world has been destroyed, I think it's way better. The studio insisted we change it because when they previewed it people thought it was "a sad ending", it was like a downer. But I think it sets up a way better sequel - Ash leading a revolt against the robots, where now he would be the primitive screw-head.
Will you ever do another Evil Dead sequel? Steven Hudson
I think if Sam gets bored playing the Hollywood game there might be, but right now he's doing pretty well, so I think he's pretty busy with the Spider-Man thing.
When are you ever going to get on with the planned Phantasm film, as us fans have waited years to find out what the hell the films are about?! Alan Mckennae
Well, the issue of financing has to take place. You know, this was a script that Roger Avary wrote immediately after winning an Academy Award. His agent asked him what he wanted to do and he said "I want to write Phantasm 5", and they laughed in his face but he said, "No, I'm serious." So he did, and it's a fun script, but at this point they're just trying to get the dough together, so there's nothing to talk about really.
Bruce, what made you decide to play Elvis in the upcoming Bubba Ho-Tep, and when are we likely to see this released in the UK? Julian Bacchus
Hopefully that thing will be out in a year or so. I took it for the same criteria that you and I were talking about, in that Don Coscarelli has made movies before, he's familiar with the genre; the script was really bizarre but I enjoyed it, I enjoyed the fact that it was an unblemished look at a character and that Don was going to take enough time to shoot it. He took six weeks, and for a low-budget movie that's not bad. That's how I judge how fast you're going to have to move. It was good and I'm glad I did it. It was not an easy shoot, but I'm glad I did it, because the fans seem to enjoy it.
Over your career, you've played a number of comic characters. Have you ever wanted to do something radically different? Shakespeare perhaps? Kev
Shakespeare's too tough for me, only because I can't really get into it, and it's hard for me to get excited about something I can't really get into. Regular stage, yeah. You know the book Shane, which was made into a film? I did a live version on stage this past summer in Ohio, so that was fun to do, strange things like that, where you really have to act again, there's no breaks like cinema, you really have to do a good job. It's good to do that every so often.
You seem unique in the film industry as someone who, although successful and respected by millions of fans, always seems to have his feet on the ground. How? (and have you ever thrown a "star" tantrum?) Phil Askey
Well, I'll throw a tanty, or, as they used to say in New Zealand, 'spit the dummy', if I think there's something to really protest, but the trick is to try and head off the elements that would create a tantrum. If there's a director you think is an idiot, don't work with him! If the script is really a problem, say no! That's the only way to make it work. You have to get a lot of things clear ahead of time. I think that just comes with knowing how a movie is made, which is why I recommend every actor go to Filmmaker Bootcamp, so they know how the process works. I think having done more things than just act has given me a better view of the world.
What do you least like being asked? Daniel Webb
Oh, you know, probably the Evil Dead 4 sort of stuff, but only because I've heard it so many times. I don't take issue with that person asking it, because I can understand their interest, but the last movie was 11 years ago, so it's not like it's on a freight train to getting done. And now that Sam Raimi is doing Spider-Man 2, it's going to be a while.
