Spirit Trap

IN A NUTSHELL...

The Story: Billie Piper gets her first lead role in this teen horror/thriller, about five students who discover things going bump in the night when they arrive at a new and suitably creepy residence. Luke Mably (The Prince & Me) and Sam Troughton co-star in the low-budget directorial debut of David Smith. The film was shot mainly in Romania and also marks the acting debut of Russian pop star Alsou.
Useless Fact: Alsou was the Russian entry in the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second behind Denmark.

THE REVIEWS...

Positive reviews

Shadows "The action-packed plot merrily twists and turns, and the effects are simple and inventive" (3/5)

Mixed reviews

Empire "Intriguing to watch, and punctuated with genuinely powerful scenes, but it's overloaded with dialogue and ideology" (2/5)

Sky Movies "I'm sure nobody would be brave enough to call it a classic but then it's not a complete waste of time either"

Time Out "Director David Smith offers some eerily lit interiors and there are effective moments of perception-warping paradox or conscience-pricking visitation"

Negative reviews

BBC Movies "A Britflick that's more in need of an exorcist than an audience" (1/5)

Film 247 "This film is horrific but not in the way the director intended" (1/7)

Times "Billie Piper is the psychic star of Spirit Trap, a truly mesmerising piece of hocus-pocus" (1/5)

Channel 4 "Spirit Trap buries a halfway decent idea under a mountain of bland haunted-house clichés"

Film Exposed "Formulaic and unoriginal, which could be forgiven if only there were the slightest atmosphere of fear or impending doom"

Guardian "It's like a horror-film version of The Young Ones" (1/5)
