BBCi FILMS - Readers' Reviews

What a wasted opportunity. Instead of a film celebrating Mayan culture, Mel Gibson gives us Rambo in a foreign language.

Gorius extremius, if you like seeing people having their hearts ripped out, and I don't mean metaphorically, then this is for you. Be warned.

Chris
Pleasantly surprised! A genuinely gripping action flick, with subtitles! And it's not half as gruelling to watch as The Passion

dr andy hershon
Stunning - but not one for the squeamish! Worried about subtitiles, but not a problem

eoin
decent film , quite gorey. If your going to see it , go and see it in the cinema as some scences are epic

i really enjoyed this film, i wasnt actually realising that it was subtitled because it was so good. I've heard that Mayan people have been complaining it shows off their culture in a bad light but from what ive seen and read it seemed reasonably accurate, and the final scenes gave a feeling of impending doom rather than some sort of salvation which I've heard mentioned.

This film is nothing short of stunning and pays attention to detail. Each scene is wonderful and full of twists and turns. Its a long film but this is needed to draw the viewer into the lives of the communities involved.

Matthew Smith
Toe-curling excitement injected with a chemist full of adrenaline: 'J ames Bond' meets 'Last of the Mohicans' meets ‘Mission Impossible’. Spellbindingly cinematic: full bodied shots of spectacularly enchanting scenery – the grandeur of Cleopatra with a testosterone filled very capable male cast. Basically, get off the couch and go see or yourself!

i enjoyed this film alot as i am a big fan of mel gibsons work but sadly for me i watched the best parts on the net which ruined it for me as i knew whats going to happen, overall it was a good film and i recommend it if you are into films such as "the last of the mohicans and braveheart"

The humour and artistry at the start soon turn into a depressing dirge of a mid- section which just about sent me to sleep. When I woke, I thought I must have been out for quite a while as I then appeared to be in the middle of a remake of the Schwartzenegger classic "The Running Man". While I was pleased to see the action and pace was as good, it was if anything slightly less believable.

If you liked Passion you will love this. Dont let the idea of subtitles put you off! I was captivated from start to finish, with an edge of your seat chase at the end. Gory in parts but has a few lighthearted moments of humour.

The setting and language set it apart but it's all familiar stuff. We meet our hero, We meet the head bad-ass, his psycho right- hand man who makes the whole thing personal and we just know that there'll be a reckoning come the end. That's not to say that it's a bad movie. It's breathlessly exciting in parts, but bordering on ridiculous in others. A daft, violent treat

Orpheus
Dreadful, I almost walked out about half way through but there was an interesting 5 mins and anyway I thought I would have completely wasted my day if I didnt at least see the end - it was the wrong decision I should have walked. It is a cliched, preachy, dull, badly overacted, insulting, poorly directed, rip off of so many other films. Avoid

Stefan Johnson
Awesome, thats the first word that springs to mind, absolutely awesome, from start to finish, a GREAT movie, with a very great message

Stephen, London
Blood, guts, misery and suffering! And then just to make sure that the audience IS watching with the look on thier face being that of an exceptionally stunned mullet, a boat- load more blood, guts, misery and suffering!! I thought the sacrifice- obsessed baddies were about as savage as you could get, right up until the arrival of the infinitly more savage white man and his christian cross!

John chisense
Very good

adam
i think this film is the poor

Best movie of the Year

My wife came out furious about the 'Oh it's ok, look, the Christians are here to save you from your depraved selves' ending. Im not sure i read it like that. I saw a circular of naive innocents slaughter animals, urban society slaughters rural innocents, and look, 'civilisi ng' westerners slaughter them all. Whatever way it was intended, this movie is brutal and bloody to an extreme.

JL
Spot on review from Paul Arendt, if you expect something like The New World you'll probably be disappointed. The story itself is very simple and derivative, but no less entertaining for it. Lol at the Passion comment at the end!

Paul Hooper
A quality film, not as violent as it's been made out to be, also with some great comedy moments. A great action flick without the slightest hint of any Jew bashing. Nice one Mel!

karina
beautiful! havent seen such a heavy movie in years! the actors were amazingly beautiful and talented, the whole story brought shivers down my spine. Perfectly made although very fast at times,my eyes were trying to catch up 360 degrees motion :)

Iain Cochran
What cinemagoers and reviewers seems to be missing about this film is it is EMOTION that underlies all actions. Mayan's bring about emotional control by sacrifice and fear of unknown (god, eclipse). The underlying INSANITY that afflicts all civilisations is depicteds well. All societied better heed well the apt Will Durant quote that opens the film. Revenge & power gain by supression is deadly.

The setting and language set it apart but in terms of characterisatio n and narrative it's all familiar stuff. We meet our hero, then the head badass, his psycho right- hand man who takes a dislike to our hero and we know it's personal. That's not to say that it's a bad movie. It's hugely entertaining and breathlessly exciting in parts, but ridiculous in others. A daft ultraviolent treat

anthony cowans
it was so boring vultures started circiling me thinking i was dead. I HATED IT !!!!!!!!!!!

Alex London
Although not a documentary, the use of Yucatec and a cast of unknowns gives a refreshing non-Hollywood feel. Definitely worth the price of a ticket.

Robin
This is the best work of Mel Gibson. Within minutes it will take you to a new world, full of action with realistic story. Must see and can be only see the potential at the cinima. 9/10.

It was great, very simple and to the point. It was a primal story, simplicity isn't usually a good thing in a film, but it suited this one very well. It's just a guy trying to survive and save his family. And that is something we can all relate to, weather it was in the Mayan times or today. It's a great flick, very entertaining and really not as violent as everyone says. see it it is worth it.

Al
There's no single character in the film that isn't at one point losing blood. Though the violence at one one stage becomes annoying the film manages to keep itself interesting! Great ? No! Worth watching? Sure!

apocalypto sh** it is killing and running one man can not run for 3h ok he is runnig for 3h but is 138 min to long and i felt like killing my self

Bob
This film is basically Home Alone - In the Jungle

Conor - Dublin
Spot on review. Very entertaining and exiting film - especially the 2nd half. Don't go for insight on the collapse of Mayan society however if you like your action fast & furious this is for you.

Calum Price
Brilliant. One of Mel Gibson's best directing films ever. It's far better than the Passion of the Christ.

Jack
Such a good movie, you will be shocked!

Anne H
Fantastic! I am not a fan of gore and after reading your review I was expecting something pretty horrific. Not so. Yes it was violent but not "ultraviole nt". The acting was 1st rate. We were glued to the screen from start to finish. Exciting stuff. MG's best yet.

Al
This is a fast,gripping,p leasegodsdonotl etthemcatchhim chase film.But I expect Mayan community groups will be upset at their negative portrayals.Terr ific fun.But S C A R Y.

it was verry exsiting for me it was verry reall

Avi Cohen
I don't like Mel Gibson. He is not a man I like or his movies.

Ben Palmer
This looks like an amazing film. With Mel Gibson at the helm it will be a legendary film.

Jackie
Ultraviolence and bloody gore. I guess critics never saw Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Lord of the Rings, Gangs of New York, or Sin City. This movie is far better and more tolerable. Gibson is a really good director.
