If theres 2 words that could wrap this up its 'un-original' yet 'compelling'. What it lacks in fresh material or breaking new ground, it more than compensates with moments of creativity and spot-on acting. Phoenix rises from the ashes yet again with a barn-burning performance, Wahlberg doesn't drop the ball and Duvall coasts thru effortlessly. Not a crime classic but arresting entertainment 8/10

A small film dressed up as a big film. The whole thing looks worn and tired. Far too dour to generate any real feeling for the characters. Only Robert Duval holds the attention of the viewer. A shame because I like this directors first film, "The Yards".

The story has been borrowed from a very famous Bollywood/Indian blockbuster called DEWAAR (Amitabh Bachan). Never thought Hollywood would end up doing this!.
mario
joaquin phoenix is excellent again

An unengaging story which has been told many times, often far better than this.Stop Wahlberg playing cops please!
Rona
An absolutely turkey of a film. Yes, the performances were mostly good, but Duvall is 20-plus years too old to be a police chief, and his colleagues were equally laughably geriatric. After a promising start, the script quickly descends into cliches of the 'man's gotta do' variety. The plot gets progresively sillier, until it's simply an insult to your intelligence. Avoid at all costs!

Watch American Gangster instead!

Brillant, clear and compelling cinema, Joaquin Pheonix has proved again what a wonderful actor he is. This is one i could watch over and over again.
