Relax and allow yourself to be a child again and this is great escapism. Don't ask too many questions and roll with it . Haven't read the books so can't compare. However, a very enjoyable afternoons viewing.
Chris
A blatant attempt to launch another "Lord of the Rings"-esque franchise. Just doesn't pay off.
john
loved it loved it soooo much
Roy G. Biv
Looking for an extended edition version, which should make the film more accessible to a wider audience. For young girls and boys this is a superb film. For others, less so, though if you add additional scenes for an extended version, I think it would be very well received by a wider audience. A fine, if somewhat restricted effort. Let's see more content & it will be a fine DVD rental.
Netty Peep
I hadn't read the books and had no idea what the film was about and now 16hrs later I am no further forward with it. Totally confused with the plot- my friends teenage children who have read the books couldn't enlighten me with this story. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.
Medway
I took my sons, aged 9 and 7. We haven't read the books but for pure cinema entertainment this was one of the best! Dakota Blue Richards was exceptional, a splendid cast, excellent special effects and a fast paced plot. Far superior to Harry Potter or Narnia. We loved it!
mineesha
it was very imaganative, the special effects were really good
Jake
This film was a little disappointing. The plot does not really progress, but lurches from one CGI laden scene to the next. Visually impressive, but that alone is not enough, I doubt if the proposed Trilogy of films will now happen. I watched this with my 6 year old nephew and even he was unimpressed.
Fiona
What'the matter with you people? It was fab! I love the books and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Yes there are bits missing but there always are when books are turned into film but it was brilliant. Would definitely recommend it. Just hope they carry on as The Subtle Knife is my fav book of the trilogy.
Mandy
Awful. What is the point of doing an adaptation of a book if you are not going to at least make an attempt to do it justice. An utter waste of an evening and a huge disappointment - it could have been so good.
bob
i really enjyed it!!!-it was soooo good!!!!!!!!
The Lej
A woeful adaptation of an excellent book
Tom
Awful. The director seems out of his depth. He's managed to strip all the emotion out of the quite wonderful books. At no point do you feel involved with any of the characters, scenes that are incredibly powerful in the book are skipped through far to quickly. A real shame because these books deserve a screen adaptation to equal to the quality of Lord of the Rings.
Cylon Zed
Saw this anticipated film over the weekend....and felt I could have spent my money and time better.....like buying 7 loaves of bread and feeding the ducks while listing to Pat Butchers greatest hits on my MP3 player....Cylon Zed
Lesley
loved the books- hated the film. not enough time was taken to expand the plot and weitz changed details in the plot that didn't need changing.the masterpiece of northern lights the books is not replicated in the film- utterly dissappointing!
Hadjira
Too messy - no direction and a failed escapade. Very dissapointing
V Martin
Every time I watch a film from this genre I can't help thinkig how they just don't live up to Lord of the Rings
Sophie
The Golden Compass has as much hype to it and for fans of the book the plot it is disapointing. This was due to the lack of ending within the film with the final 4 chapters missing. However the film was brillaintly cast with Nicole Kidman perfecting Mrs Coutler and Dakota Blue Richards being engaging as Lyra. She could give Daniel Radcliffe a run for his money!
G Price
This film was brill. I asked my daughter half way through if she was enjoying the film and she replied "I've not blinked yet in case I miss anything". The girl that plays Lyra was perfect for the part. I was just disappointed at the end as they missed the last few chapters of the book. Can't wait for the next film.
Tim W
Fantastic! This film was just amazing. Why do so many people jump on the bandwagon about slating it? For a standalone film it was pure escapism full of fun and fantasy. It will bring the child out in you and reminded me of the awe of star wars when I first watched it. Brilliantly Cast and the fast pace keeps you on your toes.Cant wait for the next 2 films Well Done!
shimmy shake
this film is as cold as a polar bear's privates. too long and uninvolving.
Tom, Brum
Having never read the books and judging it purely as a movie in its own right I have to say that this was very disappointing. The whole thing feels incredibly rushed, most the characters come across as Lord of the Rings Stereotypes and it's so po-faced and humourless it can be a chore at times. It has some very nice ideas, but they're executed badly and the whole thing feels like a cheap cash in.
Stewart
Book about truth and freedom turned in to a story about a talking bear. I look forward to Weitz's version of Hamlet about a man and a skull. Dumbing Down !!!
Sandy
Having read the reviews I expected a slightly shallow if visually stunning film, unsurprisingly this was exactly what I saw. I believe this was the most expensive film ever made and the visual effects are spectacular, but having ready the books, the watered down anti-religious themes and charge of what was a vicious cliff hanger ending in the book to a happy ending in the film annoyed me.
Alan
How very disappointing to see that the star reviewing for this film on this page has already been infiltrated by a lot of people who obviously haven’t seen the film but already have their opinion. It’s a great film, though not perfect, of a great trilogy of books of a fantastic story. Certainly worth seeing.
sarah
I was expecting it to be better than it was from the adverts on TV but when i went to see it at the cinima I was completely bored and and very suprised how bad it was in the end. I was very excited to see the film but it was a complete shamble I totally think the film stardust was better!
GMastEr
An absolute travesty in every sense of the word.
Marty
If ever there was a film that takes a good story and completey wrecks it, this is it, total garbage!!! I'm so angry with this film
Craig Forshaw
I went to see "The Golden Compass" last night, eager due to my love of the books (I think they are the best series of books EVER written). Given this, you must understand it pains me to say I loathed this. There is a reason the books are in "teenage fiction" rather than "childrens" in book shops! The ending? Atrocious. Why cant Hollywood start being creative rather than destroying others work?
Saira
This was a great film with fantastic effects and a great cast. I read the book so many years ago I barely remember it and so was able to watch it without comparing it to the book. It was exciting all the way through. It was amazing how they managed to explain so much without making the film boring or too long.
Andy
A very faithful adaption of the book.Dakota Blue Richards is excellent and Nicole Kidman was born to play Mrs Coulter.
Jo
Everyone involved in this film should hang their heads in shame. All of the book's intelligence and sublety has been surgically removed. I suspect sabotage.
Marc Gunn
If I hadn't read the book I may have said that this film was mildly entertaining but overall dull. However, having read the book I can clearly state this film is terrible. They have changed key plot points, characters, sequencing and they even finish the film before the ending of the book. Instead of leaving you wanting to see more I left the theatre hoping they don't make any more.
Thaddeus Rasbash
An alright film nothing particularly memorable apart from Nicole Kidman who was pretty good
A Lenart
Movies are not about special effects-they should tell stories. The book does tell a story, the movie doesn't, because since key plot events have been put in the wrong order, nothing makes sense. Save your money.
caitlin
yhis is a great and scary film
Craig Henderson
This could have been very special, but it has some seriously gaping flaws. Well, okay - perhaps I'm being a bit cruel here, but I was just so dissappointed by this adaptation after being thrilled by the books. The main problem is the pacing. We get short scenes of dialogue/action interspersed frequently by fly-past shots of airships. It doesn't glue together well at all. Such a shame.
Jamo
Awful, a poor man's Lord of the Rings!
yohan
verry good
Theresa
this film really pulled the punch the book (which is in my top 10 of all time) delivers, but to be fair, it would have been impossible to pack the whole story into one film, and the politics must have weighed down on this. some of the magesty of the book was watered down, but this was a children's film at the end of the day. The visual look of the film was wonderful.
amie
didnt not understand this film at all !
shoaib
this film is the worst i have ever seen. what a waste of £20
Megan
the producers take a great book and turn it into a wonderful film
Nigel
This is complex material to condense but the film does ok but I agree with other comments that an extended DVD version will probably improve things. The CGI was excellent as was Dakota and the casting in general. Being one of my favourite trilogies, I thought they did a pretty good job. Why wouldn't we want another franchise if it's anywhere near as good as LOTR.
Lucy Williams
I don't think I have ever had the urge to leave a film as much as I did this one. Everything was wrong with it: the CGI was awful, the acting atrocious. There was no character development, a confusing and skewed plot, a jumbled message and important parts of the story missed out or skirted over - and don't get me started on the end. Yuk. I don'tknow how Pullman can stand it. I can't.
Zoe
Disappointed as the film moved through the story too quickly/superficially. This resulted in a lack of tension and suspense. Can'tunderstand why the film didn't finish with the end of the first novel. The ending of Northern Lights is gripping and compelled me to continue reading. Will probably watch the sequels, because of the appeal of PhilipPullman's novels, rather than the film.
Benjie
Absolutely amazing I am reading the book at the moment and i'm finding that as good as the film!!
jess
the flim has destroyed the book
jack
loved the book but this was awful.
Dave Bate
A very impressive looking film, but one that leaves the viewer feeling very unsatisfied at the end.
Jonathan Penn, JPMedia
Having never read the book and taking the film at face value, I found the Golden Compass to be: Entertaining, visually appealing, story line somewhat disjointed in places, not anymore boring than the latest Harry Potter film, the weak ending was more to do with under funding than the quality and skills of the Director. Overall, a good effort Grade B, next one could do better by having more punch.
Mark Stevenson
Adult themes (anti-religion) and a children's story of talking animals and a little girl's quest make this difficult from the get-go. The FXs are staggering, the story lacks coherence and thrust. Threads dangle everywhere at the end as the book's final three chapters get lopped off. Great fantasy adveture - but wobbling a little in the shaky hands of an inexperienced director.
lily
i think this movie is absolutley magnificant
Cliff White
As a huge fan of the books & the negative reviews, I nearly didn't watch it in case it took the magic away of the characters/story. The film was wonderful - such a pleasant surprise. Hats off to the director for this brave attempt crafting something much loved by many. The cast - esp. Dakota Blue Richards - was rich and involving. Effects bursting with energy. Well done to all, esp. Mr Pullman.
Nana Wilson
Absolutely awful and lacking in entertainment
Sarah
It's a good film, just people don't seem to understand that it's meant to raise questions and not answer them. That's why there will be sequels.
Catherine Snowden
This film was rubbish. The effects were good, which might keep young kids amused (especially the polar bears) but i found the storyline completely lacking and by the end of the film i really didn't care what happened to any of the characters. Very disappointing and a prime example of the film industry relying too much on visuals rather than storyline.
chloe
i enjoyed the film i love it in the last number in the word i love it i want to meet the characters and go back stage
cat
great
N.Rowe
The film unfortunately manages to completely destroy the joy and mysticism of the Philip Pullman book. The scenes were well filmed and the special effects were stunning, however, they were pieced together so badly that it was virtually impossible to follow what was going on - I've read the book several times and even I had trouble with keeping up.A good idea, poorly executed 5/10
Roy USA
The Golden Compass is spiritual in many ways. Discussion of an active soul outside ourselves, deep devotion to Truth, and the dust that is akin to the spiritual reality eminently qualify as spiritual in tone. In fact, we could call this a spiritual movie on training wheels. Without bringing up particular theories of the spirit, it introduces children to spiritual type experiences and values.
pj
super the best film ive cn in a long long time
Andie w
Why bother to make a film based on a book if you cant make the film anything like the book! Mr weitz u should be ashamed! Please stay away from the subtle knife!
Wozza77
If a film is 2 be made from a book why not try & make the film slightly like the book! This film is a joke and has been make 4 children! Plz top making these films if u cant get it right! Hollywood garbage!
nasima
not read the book but the film was not too bad a bit disappointing, excellent sfx, couldve done with bit more umph
Gahks
hmm... mixed reviews. I liked it, but my mum slept through most of it! I think it could have gone deeper into the more potent aspects of the novel.
Fiera
This was the best movie i've ever seen in my whole 97 years of existance.!!!
David Wild
This is the worse film I’ve seen this year, the plot is poor, and it jumps from scene to scene without any logical sense, worse its also boring!!!!!. The visuals are great but unlike the Fellowship of the Rings this doesn’t leave you wanting to see the next film. Not even my Children (fans of the books) enjoyed it, they were bored after 15-20 minutes.
lyra
very good
Megan
Has to be said, I haven't read the books yet, but I can't help thinking that great swathes of writing were chopped to allow expansion of too few chapters, it meant that explanations were quick and inadequate. The acting was good, the special effects were good, the fight at the end was well done, but the story would have transfered to a tv series much better.
Louise
Watched this the other night, fell asleep about four times. It was dire, I have not seen something this wooden, dull and uninspiring for decades.
Brunhilde
I found TheGolden Compassthoroughlyentertaining. The film wasinteresting, visuallystunning, andthe charactersengaging. Butthe ending wasabrupt. As faras thecontroversyagainst thechurch, I amCatholic and Iwas notoffended. It'sa veryentertainingstory. Anyparallelsintentioned orimagined arenot offensiveunless youintend to takeoffense. Ican't wait tosee the nextone.
Millie
Wasn't what I expected. To slow and confusing for children.
carl
everything is wrong with this film. but i dont like the fact that the directors decided to aim it at younger kids. making the film over explanitory, miss out crucial scenes, add unnesessary scenes and give the film a happy ending that does not oocur in the book
Candice Leer
Film was OK -the script poorly written compared to the books - which are excellent. The child actress Lyra was awful - she had no idea of who she was and the lack of acting skill was very apparent. The effects saved the film but the story had no soul. There is a gorgeous song at the end about Lyra though. Please keep Chris Weitz away from any follow up.
Not so good
RUBBISH
Sam East
Utterley loved it! What a feast, took the children and we all loved it and wanted more. This is what family movies should be about.
l33y4h
it was boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorinnn!!!!!!!!! wot a waste of a skool trip!
Ryan
All and all I do not believe that this movies should have been rated only PG. I think that there more than a fair amount of ciematic computer generated violence. I think that it should have been rated at least PG-13. I have read the book(s) for the author and there is much that is left out from the books and the end leaves you hanging on for a sequel that you will not want to see.
john
Aimed squarely at children under reading age for the books. It skims rapidly over the surface of the story which is all 113 minutes was ever going to be able to do.It's a shame because what is there is pretty good. It just needed another hour to really strengthen the characters and deepen the plot, but then that doesnt matter to kids. They just want to see cute animals of which there are plenty.
Lee
the movie is alive but had its soul cutaway...
Joel Curtis
Outstanding! Best fantasy movie of the year, and one of the best ever. My whole family loved it. Go and see this movie.
Scott
I found the film increadiably disappointing. The plot seemed badly sown together. Major parts of the story was changed for film. Acting was a bit wooden. Overly sentimentla in places too, so got cheesey.
Andy
This was a brilliantly cast film that completely wrecked the emotive storyline. Scenes from the book were used completely out of context and made no sense, failing to add any sense of drama. Overall I was so disappointed - why couldn't the director have followed the lead of 'Lord of the Rings' which was brilliantly converted.
sophie mc
amazing!!!!!!!great for all the family its a thrilling story!i felt all different emotions when i watched !!! AMAZING!!
milly
I thought that if you hadn't read the book you totally wouldn't have understood the plot!
Rosie
Not bad but why did they change the ending?
mike
A terrible adaptation of an excellent book. Staggeringly disappointing.
Jodie
I think this film was WICKED! Just because of this film, I'm going to buy HDM the books! I especially liked the performances from Nicole Kidman and Eva Green, but Dakota BR did good for her first film. It took me a while to find McKellen's voice under the gruffness of Iorek, but I did. Great film, and I hope I enjoy the books just as much, and the game if I can get my hands on it! :] New Line x
J.T
I thoroughly disagree with Ms. Papamichael. The Golden Compass is neither childish or escapist, it's rather a dark, challenging fantasy epic that's much more thought provoking than shallow Hollywood dross like Lord of the Rings.
Martin Berry
I've never seen such an expensive film be so amatuerish. Badly written, badly directed; Chris Weitz is way out of his depth. It feels like they made a 3-hour film, faithful to the book, then chopped it in half; all the scenes feel unfinished and the dialogue is lumbered with exposition. There's no sense of threat, purpose or point; worst book-to-film conversion ever, hands down.
Stan
Incredibly dull; haven't read the books but was expecting so much more - like an intriging plot for instance. But this was utter and expensive rubbish.
Cameron
Hmm, if, as a 31 year-old, I'm supposed to be ashamed at having read the books, then I suppose I should be even more ashamed at having seen the movie.
Kenisha Browning
It was a gr8 film but i think it is a bit to dark for children under 8.
Asif
This film is rubbish and confusing. The little girls acting is not convincing and the directing is awful.Waste of money and time.
Chris Dooley
Did the scriptwriters evenbother to readthe books?
Jonathan Wren
Wretchedly pooradaptation of awonderful book.Confusing, poorcharacterizationand the filmfeltcold...unlikethe North whereyou never gotany sense thatthe characterswere in frozenwastes. Noteven any frozenCGI breath!Sadly I foundit boring andbadly edited, with the storyleaping frompoint to pointwithout everdeveloping orelaborating onanything. Thedirection, too,was aimless.
Hester's No.1 Fan
I really enjoyed this film. As a lover of the books I found so much to like in the way the characters and locations have been brought to life on screen. The casting is superb and Dakota Blue Richards is the best Lyra I could have hoped for. Yes, the film does suffer from the last minute plot rearrangement but it’s still a very entertaining and visually stunning two hours.
vickie
brill film cant wait to see the next one
Brendan, Birmingham
Saw this last night and it's possibly the worst film I have ever seen. Terrible editing, characterisation and acting, combined with an unengaging and indecipherable plot made this a travesty. It seems the hype was just a load of dust!
Jason
During this film I was several times prevented from COMPLETELY nodding off by the crowds of people leaving. 400 characters is just not enough to convey it's utter putridness. I heartily reccommend inserting something hot and poker-like in the orifice of your choosing. Trust me it'd be more fun!
Alex
This film was exceptionally disappointing. The pace is far too fast and ,I'm sorry I have to disagree with your reviewer, the star is just not good enough to carry it. I have, quite a while ago, read the books was left wondering what was going on and my sister, who hasn't, was lost. The only bright point was a wonderful job done by Kidman, but sadly this was just not enough.
Kimberley
As a fan of films, I can say this a thoroughly entertaining ride, brilliant cast, some great dialogue and breathtaking special effects. The only disappointment was, as a fan of the books, the lacking of the last few chapters, it gave the movie an unfinished quality and definately left more questions unanswered than solved.
Craig
Anyone who has read the book will be disappointed. Pullman's intricate narrative has been shredded apart and stuck randomly back together. Too much of the backstory discovered in book 2 was revealed, which left almost no surprises and tension. Kidman is fantastic as the icy Coulter, but other actors played down their characters, which left no ambiguity about their motives. The ending was too U.S.
Simi
I think thebook isexcellent andit is verydescriptivejust like themovie, I wasexicted towatch it andwhen i came outi was thinkingthat is a verygood movie. Ithink it's thebest one I'beseen.
blakey
What the hell is going on i went to this film to be blow away but it was like a person with asma blowing on me though a small staw what a waste of my time go see stardust if its still on tis better then this crap Much Love B XXX
Yo Mam
Poor scripting, too much plotin too littletime, Apallingaccents anddissapointingvisuals combineto leave mefeeling like Ihave beenconned
Emma
Good but it ended a chapter too early. The end is missing and as such it felt a unfinished to me. Other wise enjoyable.
T Chapman
Excellent film! Really can not understand what all the fuss is about. Easily as good as the first LOTR film and Pullman's story is superior. Yes, I have read both trilogies before any nutters rush to their keyboards! Weitz et al have done a remarkable job- exactly the right length; superb use of CGI (OK, a few seconds of clunk with wideshot scenes of Lyra riding the bear);excellent cast.
LMD
What a shame, didn't do the book justice. If the National Theatre can effectively translate the 3 books in 6 hours, why does this film struggle to do so. Poor dialogue, dodgy CGI and wooden acting. I fell asleep, perhaps it was just a bad dream?
Tom
The film itself is competently made, with impressive realistation of the books key events such as the bear fight and the climatic battle at Bolvanga. Rather, the problem lies in the fact that the epic sense of magic and adventure that made the book so compelling in the first place seems missing.Irrespective of who is to blame, you can't help but feel this is a huge missed opputunity
Happy Clapper
A proficient adaptation of what is a supremely entertaining and involving book. It works reasonably well. The casting and performances are first class as is the CGI. However, the impression given is that this is not a film made by a director who has grown up loving the novels but more as an opportunity to create some box office. The best bit for me? When the Polar Bear gets it. Sweet.
MICK LEWIS
A fantastic piece of cinema no sooner had the film started than it came to an abrupt end It felt as though we had only been in the cinema for a short time
Stephen Ash
At two hours long the film felt a bit rushed with little time dedicated to the expansion of the story. The story of the Golden Compass/Northern Lights is very complicated and this rush to get to the action left many viewers confused as to what was going on. As for the ending, I cannot understand why they would take out the last three chapters when the film could have been extended by 30mins.
Nikki
The end is a little happily ever after, whereas the ending in novel is more of a cliffhanger. I think most of the audience were a little suprised at this conclusion.
Pete G
I feel that apart from the ending this was a good adaptation of the book, in truth it should have been about an hour longer, some of the plot points were fumbled and as I said the end of the book , the best part was missing. Yet the stuff on display was great I thought, excellent casting especially Craig as Lord Asriel. I think it will be better when all the other films are out.
donnie
Pullman seemedto have soldhis soul to thedevil with thebooks, with thefilm the devilhas come tocollect.
Hmmmm.
Take a great book. Give it to the "magisterium" to turn into a film. Hey presto. Disappointing. Needless changes. What happened to Gyptian daemons- money?
A. Green
The lack of back story means there's no depth to the characters. You feel absolutely nothing for the central character, Lyra, who comes across as spoilt and obnoxious. This 'treatment' of Pullman's work is how the LOTR would have looked had it been made into one and not three films. Rubbish !
Nikki H
I adored the books, but only liked the film.Great casting, great effects. But does not explain importance of dust or daemons.Iorek is not potrayed correctly. This is worth a watch, but could have been a masterpiece.Ending was dire!!Original ending should have been kept in,if the others aren't made it still would have been a fine ending. The books are certainly not a fairytale with a happy ending!
Sue Heath
Good lord (no pun intended), what a miserable bunch you all are. Yes the book was better (it always is) but the film was still wonderful to watch and the cast brilliant. It was engaging & exciting - what more do you want. Given they have to remove all the religeoius content it was always going to veer away from the main themes of teh book.
Jason Lynam
The only reason i'd give this film 2 stars is cos of the amazing special effects. It 'looked' amazing, but the fact it made me fall asleep at 3pm during the day, speaks for itself!!
ARCHIE
Pullmans trilogy is one of the best reads you will ever have. The Golden Compass tries to cover a huge story in just under 2 hours and doesnt do a bad job of it. Great cast, great bear, and the effects are amazing. Scary stuff! Cant wait for part 2.
revolution8
This movie feels like its an epic tale thats been hamstrung by dismal writing, storytelling and lack of engagement by the actors involved. Dakota performs incredulously for her age however in some scenes appears to be simply reciting lines as opposed to really expressing them. Kidman impresses as does the sfx for the Daemons however one cant help feeling disappointed by the end
Jonathan
I good film that deserves some CGI and acting credits but it fails to attract fans of the novel.
Adam Watson
I was verydisappointedwith this film.I loved HisDark Materials, but the movieadaption ofNorthern Lightsdid not haveany of themagic from thefirst book. Most of theplot wasstripped away, leaving nothingmore than asouless huskfor a filmwhich deservedto be so muchmore. Its onlysaving gracewas Dakota BlueRichards, whowas superb asLyra.Everything elsewas terriblymediocre.
Ian
Being an Adult who has unashamedly read the His Dark Materials books I waslooking forward to taking my children along to see this film, and they did enjoy it but I found it dreadful and upsetting how much they have dumbed down the story, I appreciate that some elements had to be toned down but this is such a missed opportunity that I feel upset that there are two more books left to be ruined.
jodie
it was poor
Alexandra
A really wasteof time, reallyboring.. pleasedont go to seethis! What a pitty...
George
A great disappointment to lovers of the books I fear.Lyra is well played as is Serafina Pekkala., but it's not enough to save a porr script with little of the flavour of the book.
Sophia
The perfect example of how a badly written script can ruin a movie. There are no major thrills and suspense is handled very arbitrarily. The story comes to an ubrupt end after having rushed through the story. It goes for a linear narrative without any depth. Despite the effects, one fails to feel immersed in the world of magic that the book promises.
bat1984
I am very disappointed in The Golden Compass they moved things missed important parts
MC
I am an adult who read all three books recently. As with all adaptations you are left wishing there was more but the film is excellent!Epic! I loved it!
Jez Phipps
Northern Lights is a fantastic book written by a genius aimed at those of us capable of coruscation. The film, unfortunately, targets the plebeian masses who are blissfully devoid of cerebral activity.Generalisation anyone?
alex
dust??? i rest my case
Mel
Having read the book just last summer,I constantly compared the film to the book and disappointed with the ending.Lyra was amazing, having never acted before I was very impressed. It was however, a good film and I would advise anyone to see the film as it's good entertainment and I can't wait for the next part. It's the best film out at the moment and if you have to see one film, let this be it.
Ushavijayan,Oxford
Golden Compass is not a great film but it is a good film
Wanda
Disappointing. Based on a great book, the film lacks pace and somehow seems too long. For fantasy Stardust is much better.
A.V.Vijayan,Oxfors
It was really a difficult film to be made and director Chris Weitz has succeded in his venture considerably.
craig
this movie is terrible, poor acting, PS2 graphics, and a plot which noone could understand. Please do NOT go and see it!
Lisa
If this was an original film not an adaptation of book then I would say the film was pretty good. However, having read and loved the books, I felt that the story was almost unrecognisable from the one I knew. My partner, who hasn't read the books, really enjoyed it and that probably made all the difference. On a plus note the fight scene between the armoured bears was absolutely fantastic!
Rene
A bit boring, sorry.
P Lee
Husband, who had not read the books, and myself, who has both enjoyed the film. I thought Lyra was very good.
Martyn Thomas
Theres something there....behind the wooden leading lady( Dakota is painful on screen), dire pacing and incoherent script. There's hints that there's a good story there somewhere. They were trying too hard to make this film an 'epic' that it lost it's focus- alot. I was bored watching the film - but it left me wanting to read the book to see how it should have been. 2/5
Sara Khan age 11
The films script is so close to the book its almost like i imagined. The story is a facinating and wonderful story too good to put into words. I rated it 5 star because its so good that i wish we were in a world like Lyra's.
Samantha
Also, how can people say this film was faithful when it changed the characters of the book. There is no straight line between good and evil in the book, its not a dumb fairy tale that I've seen a million times before.Where is the feeling in it?The question raised in this film were "how was this ever alowed to be shown" and the ones raised in the book were not even covered.
Samantha
Everything 'good' or 'tragic' bit that made this book good is missed out or messed up in this film. They changed the character of the bear! But the worst bit for me, they missed the ending.Nice graphics and all, but when you change the story this much, you loose what was so good about it.
Lesley
i love the books&was dismayed to find this wasn't a true reflection of 'Northern Lights' imaginative and brilliant storytelling. my main problem substantial changes add nothing and detract from the story!read the book instead of seeing the film.dakota plaed lyra well and sam elliot is cracking as lee scoresby.on the whole, very disapointing and infuriating to all who have read the books.
Moregieves
Shocking! As confused in script as it is in editing, this is a beautiful film that the director had already lost before it got to the cutting room. Good for 11year olds who don't eat too many e-numbers- they'll need to concentrate. None of the characters had a Turkey as a daemon, but if they did it would be voting for Christmas. Rent it on a wet Tuesday in March and you'll be satisfied.

I'm suprised - I wonder if half of the people on here actually saw the film before posting their opinion? A great fantasy adaption in all the ways that LOTR was and Narnia wasn't. Epic, hinting at mysteries to come and with just enough action, FX and story-driven dialogue. My only problem was the ending - totally different from the book...
James Greenwood
What happened to the end? Did they run out of money?
Craig
Remember this a three part story there is much more to come.

I'm stunned at the poor response to this film. I was unimpressed with last year's Narnia, disliked large parts of Lord of the Rings, but thought this terrific. I didn't fancy it & have never read the books (they're for children and adults should feel ashamed if they have) but thought the imagination at work terrific, & sustained brilliantly throughout the film. Acting & effects are excellent too.

This was one of the worst films I have seen. It felt rushed, I felt no attachment to the characters. Nothing was explained, I felt sorry for the people who have not read the book. I am so disapointed, I was looking forward to a good christmas movie but I was let down. Nicolw Kidman was brilliant as were the Special FX otherwise I would give this a miss, read the book, thats fantastic.

Awful! If you want to see an entertaining family film go and see STARDUST! Golden Compass has a lame ending and it would be better to abandon the idea of making another two films.
Lord Nozom
A weak weak film with a disjointed confusing story for those who've not read the books and a virtual rewrite for those who have.In the end, a messy frustrating affair with little character development and some pretty animation.

This film wasalways going tobe an easytarget for bookfans to scoffat, but despitenot quitecapturing theessence of thebook, as a filmI thought itworked well.Kidman ismagnetic andthe SFX arevery well done.Special mentionfor thestunningproductiondesign - thefilm looksamazing. TheyHAD to changethe ending sothat the filmwould standalone in casethe sequelsdon't get made.

I just don't understand why the ending with the Aurora, which is actually featured in the trailer, was removed from the final film. Have they chopped it because they don't think the remaining films will be made?
luke
thoroughly disappointing!Sad but true, you just don't get a good understanding of what's going on.Lyra is played very well thank goodness!
Mitch
Rubbish wouldnt recommend this trying to be so many other films like Potter and Lion witch wardrobe among others. Worst film ive seen in ages

An absolutetravesty.Icannot expressenough how muchI loved thebooks and howmuch I hatedthe film.Theacting wasaverage atbest, the worldwas basically a Stardust latchon and forthose whohadn't read thebooks, thismust have beenincrediblyconfusing. Asfor the ending, which cut ofthe cliffhanger endingin the book, Ihave neverheard such aroar ofdisappointmentfrom theaudience.

Why do reviews constantly discuss the fact thatDaniel Craig is rarely seen? Lord Asriel is not a main charatcer in the first book, but he is key in the second and third! The film was dim compared to the amazing book, and taking out the anti religious content completely rips apart the story.
Andy Brown
Awed by lord of the rings, bored by the 1st Harry Potter. How would this latest fantasy film adaptation fare? The answer, very average, its OK, but lets down the fantastic storytelling of Pullman. Kidman is wonderful but i thought Dakota didn't capture Lyras fire. The real problem is the direction, its very clunky and lacks imagination.
laura
is was good

Thoroughlyenjoyed it,even though itcould beimproved withany amountadditionalrunning time.

As someone whohasn't read thebook, I needthe film toexplain thestory indetails andprovidebackgrounds tothe characters, side storiesand races thatinhabit theworld.Unfortunately,it utterlyfails.Very little issaid aboutanything oranyone and inparts iscontradictoryleaving youbemused as towhat's going onand why this ishappening. Not worth it ifyou haven'tread the book.

Let's not betoo hasty inreviewing thisfilm as asingle piece ofwork. Since itis based on atrilogy ofbooks, and thatoriginal bookraisedquestions thatwere notanswered untilthe 2nd or 3rdI think it isperfectly fairthat this filmdoes the same. Surely itshould not bemarked down foritssimilarities tothe book.
