BBCi FILMS - Readers' Reviews

Silly. Stupid. The film sort of offers a few q's re-happiness in a cynical and depressed world, but if Poppy is the antidote to that, pass the prozac.

I walked out halfway through - Poppy is the most annoying character in movie history (move over Jar Jar Binks). I have never wanted to slap someone so hard. Good luck getting through this monotonous go-nowhere film.

I saw this last night and it was followed by (a live via satellite) Q &A with Mike Leigh which was interesting. It is overall a good film but loses its way at times...Poppy is a really interesting character but Scott (the driving instructor) ultimately steals the film. Worth seeing, and nice to be smiling when coming out of a Mike Leigh film!

Wake up you lot !! This is an excellent film. We all need some of Poppy`s insight, love, humanity and cheerfulness in our lives. If you missed how sharp and observational most of the dialogue was then I`m sorry; you weren`t paying enough attention. I laughed so much early on in the film and then was moved as the film became more serious. - If you can`t take Mike Leigh then stay out ofthe cinema

A charming, funny feelgood movie in which admittedly not a lot happens but is very worth seeing none the less. Are you a Poppy or a Scott?

Some great peripheral characters (dancing instructor, brother-in-law, and of course driving instructor) but Hawkins, as the lead Poppy, really needed reigning in. Enjoyable but flawed.

Michael Browne
Poppy, the main charater, superficial, niave, cliched and dull. But Leigh had planted a message in the opening shot, the impossible, disjointed cycle through London.Poppy isn't the point, its the people we meet on the way that are.Marsan's driving instructor is genius, the flamenco teacher unmissable and the brother in law a gem. By the end we understand why Poppy refuses to acknowledge reality!

This filmreally grew onme so that bythe end I lovedit. At firstPoppy isintenselyirritating, andscenes areslow, but the characters andsituations grewinto something wonderful.

Already a Mike Leigh addict,I admire him all the more now and left the cinema vowing to be more like Poppy! She isn't silly or naiive and fully understands human nature and how to deal with those who can't be as happy-go-lucky as she is.

Adil
Excellant date film.

So I spent 8 quid and risked missing out on the first sunny afternoon this year... was it worth it? I'm afraid not. Why not? Well, the lead character is simply annoying and the story of 21st century urban living could have been told in a much more imaginative way. I'd say wait for a dvd, in fact wait for when it's on telly... this is whatthis film is most suited for.

Attempted update of Abigail's party. Old fashioned music and unbelievable scenes. Young sister at university. You have to be joking.

Marie
Worst movie ever seen. Cringing dialogue, no meaning. Please do not go - save your evening and your money for something more worthwhile.

Nicola
Worst movie I have seen in an age. Irritating, purile dialogue, no depth, no meaning, wanted to join those walking out. Only scene to ease the pain of staying - the 2 mins Spanish dance scene. Having enjoyed his previous movies - oh so disappointed.

'...but you're not quite sure where it's all going.' The reviewer sums the whole film up with this line; happy go lucky goes absolutely nowhere and left both myself and my girlfriend feeling cheated out of a tenner. Would not reccommend this 'film' to anyone. AVOID.

The outstanding feature of this film is the performance of Sally Hawkins. She is truly mesmerising.Mike Leigh's love of London shines through every frame.

I adore Mike Leigh's films and have been looking forward to this film for months...but what a complete disappointment. I spent the first half trying to enjoy myself, laughing at the poor humour, and smiling a forced smile along with that of the emotionally deranged lead...ultimately I cracked. I am a Happy-Go-Lucky type person but found every minute of this film more Annoying-Go-Excruciating.
