Possibly the under rated movie of the year. No award buzz, no mass release yet it's a verygood film. Suspenseful, brilliantly acted, fantastic script and a brilliant ending. Where was this movie come Oscar time?

In the end it didn't work for me. It wasn't all THAT suspenseful, because we knew it was going to end in tears almost from the start. And what was dad thinking, as he snuffed out his first-born? Total amorality of sons was interesting, especially in contrast to parents.

absolutely brilliant! i totally loved this film; serious, well-acted, adult film-making with actors on their best form. sid lumet may be in his eighties but he still rules! tough and sexy crime flicks like this rock my world.

the great acting covers up a pretty thin plot which is annoyingly done in a series of flashbacks/forwards.but at least you get to see marisa tomei naked.

A dark and gripping tale of an extremely dysfunctional family. Very intriguing - you really don't know what's going to happen next, except that chances are it's going to be pretty bad... (by the way the BBC review has the character's names mixed up! Ethan Hawke is Hank, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is Andy...)
Bessie1906
Rubbish. The trailer for Semi-pro was infinitely superior.

I was thoroughly disappointed by 'Before the Devil...'. Good solid acting, but not a lot else. It felt like 30mins worth of entertainment stretched to fill 2 hours. After the first hour, I was willing for the end. When it did, I wasn't at all suprised.

what a brilliant film, so well directed and acted. p.s.hoffman is easily one of the best actors in the usa and has been for years. don't miss this movie, very adult and very intelligent.

A tale of anguish caused when morality perverted by money and stupidity - a shocking movie, from the opening premise down to the final scramble for cash. Utterly believable and tragic without the pathos.

Possibly the worst film i have ever seen!It was slow from start to end with little happening and a see through plot. The acting was dull with stupid and gross facial expressions and the flashback scenes have been done many times before.Give this one a wide berth and don't waste your money!

Possibly the worse film i have ever seen!Slow at the begining, middle and end.The flash back scenes have been done many times before, the acting was standard with lots of stupid and gross facial expressions thrown in. There is not one thing i liked about this movie, especially the vague ending in which you don't find out thee outcome for one of the brothers.Give a wide berth!

In the hands of a different director this could have been a great film: good plot, fantastic cast. But such clunky direction it dragged from the first (gratuitous) scene.
Hyperion
Overly jumpy editing makes the film irritating to watch. The continuous repitition of scenes from different characters viewpoints don't really add anything to the narrative except time.End seemed very chaotic and out of character with the rest of the script. After reading the cirtics reviews I thought this would be great and we picked it over Charlie Wilson's War. Big regret.

Flickers and smoulders like a moody volcano. The character’s are unpleasant enough to keep you watching … and guessing. Then Albert Finney appears in the final reel … and an eruption takes place!Welcome back Sidney Lumet.
