Paradise Lost is another in a long line of dull slasher flicks populated with "under-developed, under-dressed" teens, including Josh Duhamel. This time, director John Stockwell also managed to squeeze in some crass stereotypes of South American desperadoes between the big-breasted damsels. Needless to say, it got hacked to pieces by critics, but more surprisingly, died at the box office as well.
Strangers In Paradise
Could the extended, supposedly more 'extreme' edition of Paradise Lost provide an entertaining night indoors? Well, even a borderline sociopath might end up feeling cheated. The extra 3-4 minutes of footage doesn't increase the body count; it just drags out the existing action and saps the energy of the film completely.
Another eleven deleted scenes are a mix of the obvious, gratuitous and downright offensive. With his pidgin English, Brazilian dude Kiko (Agles Steib) makes the undercover gendarme from 'Allo 'Allo sound like HRH Elizabeth II. Of course there are added opportunities to perv on girls in wet bikinis, the obligatory shower scene and an abrupt alternative ending.
The Lost Uncovered
In the only behind-the-scenes featurette, the effects team reveal the challenges of working underwater with electrically charged squibs (duh...) Apparently the blokes assigned to the prosthetics department had a much better time of it; after making a latex dummy of bombshell Beau Garrett, they get to work on the lady herself. To achieve the look of having her abdomen cut open, they apply a sheet of latex over her bare torso. One of the team compares this to, "laying a big piece of prosciutto on somebody," which could be why he's drooling so much. The semi-naked Garrett laughs nervously, admitting that, yes, this is "a little creepy."
If you're idea of paradise is a naked blonde girl wrapped in Italian ham, then you might appreciate this DVD. Otherwise, give it wide berth.
