Brits Brandish Their Globes
Let's have a rousing hip-hip-hooray for Helen "Jolly Marvellous" Mirren, who led an all-out British assault on the Golden Globe Awards last night. Dame M won Best Actress awards in both movie and TV categories, for playing Elizabeth II (in The Queen) and Elizabeth I respectively. It was a great night for British talent, with Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie, Emily Blunt and Jeremy Irons all honoured for their TV work, while Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen carted off the award for best actor in a comedy. With the Globes widely seen as a reflection of Uncle Oscar's intentions, 2007 could be a great year for Blighty. Hurrah! The National Anthem will now be played. Everyone please stand.

Other People Also Win Things
Rousing patriotism now dealt with, we turn to last night's other big winners: Dreamgirls, the Motown-inspired movie musical, was the hot ticket of the night, taking a trio of awards including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and supporting awards for Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. Alejandro González Iñáritu's Babel took the Best Picture (drama) award, but the Best Director gong went to Martin Scorsese, perhaps because they couldn't fit Iñáritu's name in the envelope. Meryl Streep took the other Best Actress award for The Devil Wears Prada, while Forest Whittaker was once again honoured for his sterling turn in The Last King of Scotland. A safe bet for an Oscar nomination, that one.

Bond Assassinates Pirates
Hang on, better break out the Union Jack again. Casino Royale is officially the highest grossing film of 2006 in the UK, even beating the Hollywood juggernaut that is Pirates II. According to Variety, another solid weekend at the multiplex has seen the Bond movie's box office takings topping £52 million. With the film's popularity backed up by a raft of BAFTA nominations, all the Daniel Craig haters must be feeling rather sheepish.

Vinnie's New Role
The mysterious movie career of Vinnie Jones continues unabated. The former footballing hardman has won himself a role in Honestly, a new hardboiled crime thriller starring Tara Reid. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vinnie will be appearing alongside former pro NFL baller Eddie George. It would be nice to imagine that they are playing a pair of romantic poets, but don't hold your breath.

Tolkien Backs Hobbit
And finally, a brief dispatch from the Great Hobbit War, as the endless conflict between New Line Cinema and Peter Jackson shall hereafter be known. Regular readers will remember that New Line has blocked Peter Jackson from making The Hobbit as a prequel to his mega-successful Lord of the Rings movies. Or, that Jacko has refused to make the film until New Line gives him a big pile of money - it's all rather complicated. Anyway, Jackson has a new supporter in Royd Tolkien, great grandson of JRR himself. Writing on his Myspace site, Tolkien slammed the idea that anyone else could make the film. "Without him, The Hobbit will become what I had earlier feared LOTR was to become. To find a new director after the time and dedication Peter and all his people put in would not just be wrong, it would also be a bad decision".
