  Zhang's Triple Whammy
Chinese superstar Ziyi Zhang is close to signing a three picture deal with those wily Weinstein brothers that will see her starring in a pair of high profile remakes. First up for the Crouching Tiger heroine will be a live action version of Mulan - presumably without the talking dragon this time. This will be followed by a remake of one of cinema's all-time classics: Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. And the third movie? They're not saying yet. But it'll be a biggie. Despite the mixed reviews for Zhang's last Hollywood pic, Memoirs Of A Geisha, it looks like Tinseltown is grooming her for A-list stardom.
  Dangerous Cage In Bangkok
And while we're talking about Asian remakes: Nic Cage will star in Bangkok Dangerous, a Hollywoodised version of the 1999 Thai thriller, with original directors Danny and Oxide Pang at the helm. Yes, Oxide. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have children. Anyway, according to Variety, Cage plays a stone-cold hitman who, like all stone-cold hitmen, unexpectedly falls in love during a messy killing job. Cage is a busy boy of late - with Oliver Stone's World Trade Centre and Ghost Rider under his belt, he's already been linked to another (phew) six forthcoming movies.
  Bacon Takes Vengeance
Beware the wrath of Bacon. Kevin Bacon, that is. The Hollow Man star and six degrees game lynchpin has signed up for a vigilante vengeance thriller called Death Sentence, according to Production Weekly. The distinctly un-PC story sees Bacon as a father out for revenge on a gang that killed his entire family in some kind of unpleasant initiation ritual. The screenplay was adapted from a novel by Brian Garfield, the man who wrote - you guessed it - Death Wish. Is Kevin Bacon the new Charles Bronson? The mind boggles.
  Fanning's Blue Suede Movie
Weirdsville casting of the week: Dakota Fanning, War Of The Worlds star and Hollywood's favourite spooky moppet, has signed up to play.... Elvis Presley. Well, almost. Fanning is toplining an untitled indie movie about a young girl who overcomes the trauma of abuse by doing Elvis impersonations. Frankly, it's got cult movie written all over it in permanent marker. Robin Wright Penn and David Morse co star in the film, which is written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier.
  Miramax Feels Insecurity
As United 93 leaves audiences shaken and exhausted, Miramax is making plans for the first post-9/11 comedy. Homeland Insecurity is the story of two Arab-Americans who are accidentally mistaken for terrorists during a business trip to Texas. No word on casting yet, but the writer is Robert Siegel, who used to edit the brilliant online spoof newspaper The Onion, so the jokes should be good.
