Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis convey "the true demeaning of Christmas" in yuletide comedy Christmas With The Kranks. Head of Revolution Studios Joe Roth moonlights as director on this jumbled yarn based on the novel by John Grisham. Although critics echoed the No Ho Ho! tagline on the poster, the film just about broke even at the box office. It's a Christmas miracle!
Turkey Without The Trimmings
Apparently someone forgot to write a letter to Santa because there's almost nothing on the list of extras for this DVD. Aside from a gallery of trailers there's just one featurette that has pretty much nothing to do with the movie. Essentially it's a seasonal version of Changing Rooms - except the decorations are slightly more tasteful and go on the outside of the house. Dan Aykroyd (Vic) introduces with an avowal that, "Nothing says holiday spirit than a fierce decorating competition among your neighbours." Perhaps it's those holiday spirits that are to blame for his ongoing career slump...
Mistletoe And Whine
Production designer Garreth Stover pops up for all of thirty seconds in this 15-minute show, otherwise it's down to interior designer Cathy Ball and burly handyman James Costigan to demonstrate the dos and don'ts of tarting up your house. Costigan could be channelling the spirit of Tim Allen when he gruffly advises us to use open-eyed hooks when hanging our lights because "stapling holiday lighting is not a UL approved application". Consider yourself told.
Later on, Ms Ball shows us how to put together a garland of silk fern, fresh berries and "inexpensive balls". Are you still awake? Unless you're Laurence Llewelyn Bowen or are easily engrossed by bright, shiny things, give this DVD a miss.
