The League Of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005)
15Contains strong language, sex references and comic violence

Are you local? If you are, you might be upset by The League of Gentleman's Apocalypse, an irreverent big screen outing for the cult TV show in which the inhabitants of Royston Vasey - led by mad butcher Hilary Briss (Mark Gatiss) - escape into the real world. Purists will be dismayed that the fictional Peak District town barely features, yet it's a small price to pay for this hilarious fusion of The Truman Show, Monty Python and Hammer Horror.

Like the TV series, the atmosphere of this spin-off movie is darkly Gothic: think Last Of The Summer Wine meets The Wicker Man. But the grotesquery's been topped up with some winking, postmodern humour as Briss, Herr Lipp (Steve Pemberton) and no-hoper Geoff (Reece Shearsmith) kidnap their real-life creators after the League Of Gentlemen decide to stop writing the TV show.

"EQUAL PARTS UNNERVING AND HILARIOUS"

Clipping the cast down to size means some much-loved characters barely get a look in. Still, the sheer originality is hard to fault: an impromptu trip to the 17th Century unleashes some Python-style dressing up and a stop motion monster straight out of a Ray Harryhausen movie. Best of all, the decision to unleash these grotesque characters into the real world proves brilliantly creepy: watching actor Steve Pemberton playing Herr Lipp while pretending to be Steve Pemberton (complete with a German-Blackburn accent) is equal parts unnerving and hilarious. It seems you can take the Gents out of Royston Vasey, but you can't take Royston Vasey out of the League Of Gentlemen.
