Resident Evil: Apocalypse DVD (2004)

It was the sequel nobody asked for, but Alexander Witt's Resident Evil: Apocalypse sated bloodthirsty moviegoers to the tune of over $50m in worldwide ticket sales. If you're into "dead-eyed and soulless" then this zombie flick starring Milla Jovovich and British thesp Sienna Guillory is definitely for you.

Undead Again

Resident Evil: Apocalypse DVD In case you thought the budget for a zombie movie could only extend to a bit of old latex and a few ketchup-filled squibs, think again. A sprawling documentary covers the oodles of visual effects that went into the making of Apocalypse and also goes behind-the-scenes at "Undead Boot Camp" where thousands of extras are meticulously trained in the art of staggering about as though a little bit drunk. (Surely a few crates of vodka would have been a cheaper option.) For adolescent fans there's also an up-close-and-personal look at Jovovich running, jumping and generally kicking butt.

"Women are taking over the action movies," reckons director Alexander Witt in Game Babes. It's one of three throwaway featurettes outlining the overall concept of the film. Try not to laugh while watching Corporate Malfeasance, when cast and crew endeavour to convince us that this schlockfest is actually a timely critique on the evils of corporate America. "It's every person's journey to bring down the system," asserts Jovovich - which perhaps explains why Arnold Schwarzenegger is the governor of California.

Resurrected

Horror fans will lap up 20 deleted and extended sequences, which include a classic graveyard scrap and, hey, more running, jumping and general butt-kicking courtesy of Jovovich. Apparently though, it was difficult to keep a straight face while acting like a badass, as evidenced in a vaguely amusing blooper reel.

The cast offers a rather banal audio commentary, with startling admissions by Jovovich including, "I have to say on this movie, I hardly ate at all." Director and screenwriter deliver separate, slightly more incisive tracks. So while its undeniably patchy in places, this is a generous package of extras that will probably leave zombie fans dead happy.
