Gothika DVD (2004)

After taking home an Oscar for Monster's Ball, Halle Berry surprised audiences with her next career movie: "a witless whodunit where the biggest crime has been committed against cinema" - otherwise known as Gothika. The silly, supernatural tale of a psychiatrist who finds herself behind the bars of the very institution in which she once worked, was itself in need of some urgent medical attention after it flatlined at the box office.

Logic, Schmogic

Producer Joel Silver puts it best in On The Set Of Gothika, when he explains, "The story defies logic and is not rational." This featurette is equally as daft as - contrary to what the title suggests - there's very little in the way of behind-the-scenes footage. Instead, cast and crew go through the usual motions of explaining (or trying to explain) the basics of the story and their function within it.

Gothika DVD screengrab Painting With Fire aims to highlight the use of sophisticated CG wizardry to achieve optimum spookiness. Frankly, though, the effects ain't that hot. The computer-generated flames - which are used to flambé some of the principal characters - are supposedly the piece de résistance but the truth is, the end result is tame and unconvincing. Furthermore, the mechanics are not properly explained, with most of the screen time going to the actors who shamelessly lie about how great it all looks.

Limp Love

The making of Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes music video - which is also included - is the saviour of this disc. Lead singer (and director of the video) Fred Durst is full of mischief on the set as he gears up for his big snogging scene with Halle. And when their lips finally meet, he turns into a burbling schoolboy, enthusing, "There were fireworks - like Tweety Bird riding a polka-dotted bike around my head!"

Halle also impresses Fred by spontaneously shedding a tear for one of her close-ups. "I just lost control of my emotions," she says. But as one of the stagehands observes, "Well, she has got a little gold statue at home." Ah, more's the pity...

The film's director, Mathieu Kassovitz, and the person he describes as his "very moody" cinematographer, Matthew Libatique, aren't quite as engaging as Mr Durst, but their audio commentary is a pretty upbeat affair. Things turn a bit uncomfortable, though, around the 'road accident' scene when Libatique jokingly recalls: "We had a fight that day, remember?" Frustratingly, Libatique refuses to go into it. Ooh, who's moody now?

Patient case files for three of the film's marginal characters are also included in this package. They consist of a doctor/patient interview, a montage of the patient's drawings with ominous voiceover, and doctor's oral notes. The point of this exercise remains unclear, as with most of the features on the disc. Still, Limp Bizkit fans should be left singing a happy tune.
