Ask Almar: 26th January 2004

Don't you just hate it when a title gets quietly deleted and you know nothing about it? Tim Dobson has finally decided to invest in the excellent E.T., only to find that wherever he searches, it seems to have vanished. All is not bad Tim. The three disc Collector's Edition has been deleted (this is the one where you get the enhanced version of the film and the original version). You can still get the two-disc special edition, though, which has the enhanced version of the movie only. I found it on a number of online stores although I note some have run out of stock. One where it is in stock is Blackstar. If you're a purist and want to see the film as shown in '82, you'll have to try eBay for the three-disc release although frankly I found that the two-disc release still had my eyes moist at the end! That, and the picture and sound really are something special.

Movie Mad Mike (are you really movie mad? How does this affliction take hold?) wrote in last week asking about a possible DVD release for Schindler's List. Nothing has changed in that the UK date remains unconfirmed at the moment, but a 9th March release date has been set for the US Region One DVD. This will be a two-disc set which includes a 77-minute documentary, Voices From The Past, which contains never-before-seen interviews with Schindler survivors. For the full story, visit the Chicago Sun Times.

Peggy Cotton wrote in asking if a DVD release date had been set yet for The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. I'm afraid not, Peggy, but the likelihood is that it will come out this summer. In light of the special circumstances of your query, you could try contacting Entertainment Film Distributors at 108-110 Jermyn Street, London. Let me know how you get on.

As for all of you asking about hidden Easter Eggs on The Two Towers four-disc DVD set, the only one I know of is to be found on disc one. Go to the scene selection menu. Select chapter 30, Of Herbs And Stewed Rabbit. Press 'down' on the arrow selector of your remote and a gold ring will appear. Press enter and you'll get the amusing footage of Gollum accepting his MTV award. Let's just say his speech isn't entirely polite. Some people are so hard to please!

Please keep your queries coming in, although remember that some do take longer to research than others. Also please note that I don't deal with questions on non-film DVDs. I'm also always interested to hear your comments on DVDs you've seen and will put any good ones in the column if they are worth sharing with other readers.
