"A lean, efficient, amusing action picture", Terminator 3 blows away the senses with relentless glossy action which helps cover up any lack of substance elsewhere. The double-disc DVD does the same, with classy presentation making up for some decidedly thin extra features.
I Want Your Eyes, I Want Your Ears
Just before we terminate the rubbish on this release, let us be clear on the fact that if you want to see and hear this movie in show-stopping fashion, then this DVD kicks cyborg ass, especially with a barnstorming DTS sound mix.
Don't Come Back
The extras you need to avoid are the shameless promotional featurettes for the T3 toys and video game. Other decidedly desperate material is a documentary that is a short puff piece, and some weak text extras like a Skynet database of Terminator facts, a ropey timeline, and a rag of a featurette about Arnie's costume in the movie.
Arnie The Orator
Tear off the above-mentioned fleshy tat and you'll find a fine endoskeleton of quality extra features. Star of the group commentary by a mile is Arnie, who talks entertainingly about making the movie. His comments about the long gap between T2 and T3 should fascinate fans, while his lusty descriptions of how he imagined the "sexy" Terminatrix are of the type politicians tend to avoid! Commentary two is by director Jonathan Mostow, and he talks about some unrealised scenes that would have contributed to the story.
Levity Is Good
The special effects featurettes thankfully avoid the dullness you often get from CGI geeks talking about their work. Far more entertaining is a gag reel with Arnie playing a clumsy terminator. Slickly presented, this is an entertaining DVD package but you're left with the strong feeling that an 'ultimate edition' is yet to come.
