Based on the successful stage show, Fiddler On The Roof was one of the last hurrahs of traditional big screen musicals. Following the life of milkman Tevye, memorably played by Topol, this bittersweet tale features many great songs, on a DVD that fans of director Norman Jewison will want to see.
Miracle Of Miracles
While some shots of the sky still look a little grubby, the picture transfer on this disc is a vast improvement on TV outings. The addition of a rousing 5.1 sound mix means you can really feel the power of songs like Tradition.
Now I Have Everything
The audio commentary with Norman Jewison and Topol is a little slow, with some of the best material to be found near the beginning. More interesting is an old Canadian Film Board documentary on Norman Jewison that was shot on the set of Fiddler On The Roof. You can see Jewison really losing his rag as the production gets mired in difficulties, not helped by some uncooperative geese. In the new featurette Norman Jewison Looks Back, he's chilled out a touch since 1971 in Yugoslavia - but still recalls with a shudder just how hard the film was to make.
Do You Love Me?
Yes we do love this DVD. There's a further wealth of material to explore, including a deleted song and a chance to see the dream sequence in full colour. Effort has gone into digging out all sorts of production material, which pays off with a variety of image galleries that fans should find absorbing.
