"American Pie with a platinum Visa card?" With a quote like that from us on Todd Phillips' comedy, it's surely the perfect DVD accompaniment to your next beer purchase, but does the disc entertain once the movie is over? Well, let's just say the best material went into the film but there are a few extra pickings to be had from the rest.
Duff: Like Homework
Ever seen the earnest US TV show Inside the Actor's Studio where actors talk at length about their careers? If so, you may find the spoof on this disc quite funny, if far too long, as Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Todd Phillips run out of amusing things to say rather quickly. If you haven't seen the TV show then this feature will simply baffle and bore, although it's preferable to see a spoof like this over the usual puff promo nonsense we have to put up with, a bit like the making of featurette Old School Orientation, which we won't mention as it's not worth it.
Quick Technical Note
While we're being boring, Dreamworks have shoved on far too many alternate language 5.1 sound mixes, resulting in a discernibly soft image quality due to the lost space on the disc. It's no disaster but a sign of slipping standards that we hope won't continue.
Good - Like the End of the School Day
Phillips, Wilson, Vaughn, and Ferrell come together for a group commentary that is enjoyable to listen to. It's silly but will give you a good insight into the genuine rapport between the team and how much improvisation took place. As a result of all that improvistation there's also a blooper reel, which is mildly amusing but not as rude or funny as the movie.
