Warm hearted and character driven Barbershop, starring Ice Cube, was the surprise stateside smash hit that's got MGM already busy making a sequel. Set around the regular customers at a barbershop, it has taken inspiration from some real shops as you'll see on the DVD. While the disc is good at presenting the film, the extra features are a let down and you do wonder if the producers couldn't have been a bit more creative. How about meeting barbershop punters and finding out whether people really have such great stories to tell?
Could have been More Special Features
In the featurette Hairdo's and Don'ts, owners of real barbershops talk entertainingly about the many different hairstyles that come in and out of fashion and the clients they have. The problem is that these are only brief snap comments leaving you wanting more.
What You Get
You also get boring featurettes on colour palettes, the wardrobe department and production design. The audio commentary is mildly interesting in terms of learning how the film developed but will not grab you enough to listen to for more than five minutes.
Fun films should get fun DVDs and this one is just too dull. The movie looks and sounds great, though, and the outtakes are well worth a look.
