Jason Biggs found a slice of the American Dream with gross-out comedy "American Pie", making him forvever synonymous with pastry - perhaps a little too synonymous... He reprised the role of horny teen Jim Levinstein for "American Pie 2", and now "American Pie: The Wedding". He'll next be seen in Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Anything Else", and Ben and Jen vehicle "Jersey Girl".
Did you ever wonder about whether or not it was a good idea to do a third "American Pie" film?
We all had our reservations about possibly overdoing it but, you know, the script was great. Basically it stuck to the formula that worked for the first two movies, and for that reason I think this works as well.
What about the fact that the audience for the first film is now several years older? Are you concerned the original fans might have outgrown this?
In this one we're getting married and I think a wedding lends itself to a more mature, more adult audience. In this film, there's a really nice balance of raunch and sweetness and that's why I think it works.
Some of the major cast names aren't back for this film. Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid are all missing. How did you feel about that?
It was strange not to have all the original cast there. We missed them. But, you know, I think this was a logical next step as far as the storyline was concerned. Some characters just found themselves on the periphery of the story, and unfortunately they just didn't come back.
Are you worried that you are going to be typecast now because of doing three films as the same character?
You know what? I'm not worried. I did "The Graduate" on Broadway and I enjoyed it and I have two other films coming out soon. I know I will be able to go on and do other things. If I was going to be typecast, "American Pie" and "American Pie 2" would do that on their own. "American Pie 3" isn't going to make a difference. And, at the end of the day, I love this character. I love playing Jim. I love working with this cast and the opportunity to come back and work with them again was just way too appealing for me. Also, I think this is a great way to wrap up the franchise.
"American Pie: The Wedding" is released in UK cinemas on Friday 15th August 2003.
