Donnie Darko DVD (2002)

There aren't many of us who would readily admit to not knowing what a film was about. So for those of you captivated by the unusual and hypnotic "Donnie Darko", the good news is that a lot of the cast and crew interviewees on the DVD are at pains to try and work out for themselves what their project is all about.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture Despite modest budgeting the film has a glossy lustre to the cinematography, which looks fantastic on disc.

Sound The 5.1 sound is especially effective when you're hit with the spooky, "Wake up". You'll know what we're on about if you've seen the film.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary One Writer and director Richard Kelly is joined by lead star, Jake Gyllenhaal, for a commentary where both try to examine what's actually going on in the movie.

There are also a few quality anecdotes, including one that the infomercials were actually shot at Patrick Swayze's house, and his wife rummaged about in Patrick's wardrobe to dig out all his 80s gear so they could get him looking as cheesy as possible.

Audio Commentary Two There's so much laughter from this mass group commentary it's sometimes hard to make out what people are saying. Any points made are quickly lost, too, in what's a bit of a muck-about for a cast which clearly got on well.

Deleted and Extended Scenes There are 16 scenes in this section, which come with an optional commentary by Kelly. Amazingly within this selection is one scene that was cut, despite Francis Ford Coppola telling Kelly it contained the line that summed up exactly what the movie was all about.

B-roll/Outtakes This is four-minutes of clips that are mostly rubbish, bar an amusing fruit-eating scene between Drew Barrymore and Noah Wyle.

Cunning Visions Infomercials See those hilarious infomercials in full, and with optional spoof director's commentary.

Cast and Crew Interviews What may look like a comprehensive interview section reveals numerous cast and crew interviews that are really only snippets where story and character are discussed.

Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD is a production stills gallery, artwork gallery, 'They Made Me Do It' graffiti gallery and featurette, website gallery, trailer gallery, 'Philosophy of Time Travel' interactive book, and an amusing Cunning Visions gallery.
