Keanu Reeves took Film 2003 inside "The Matrix Reloaded" and told us what's new for Neo.
Film 2003: With some shots taking up to two years to create, do you feel that you are pioneering special effects on this film?
Keanu Reeves: I have that sensation working on the picture. I'm just an actor, I show up. But in terms of what they're developing with that, two years ago they were in research and development on camera techniques, scanning techniques... in the hope of creating simulated humans. Even then they were using different lenses, digital cameras, exploring motion capture aspects, it has been exciting to be around. On some days you can walk into a situation where you go: "Oh this has never been done before", where it's really cutting edge technologies being used to tell stories, to present images.
How does the technology involved affect your acting?
The other day was probably the most extreme version of that. They have five digital cameras set up and they're doing facial capture, and they need certain reactions but you can't move because you get in the way of the light. So you have to emote but you can't move, you still have to act and think what does your face do when you kick someone - but you can't kick. But that information is going to be interpreted and then realised, it's going to become part of my performance.
Your character Neo has moved on from the first film, pupil becomes master...
Well I wanted to take that into account, and the script does. Neo's demeanour in "The Matrix" has developed, he's no longer "oh wow", he owns it now. But there's some drama so there's new challenges, new obstacles, so what you think you know, you don't know. He's been developed so he's not the innocent starting on the journey anymore.
What was your injury quota like in training this time?
Not bad, I haven't really been injured, luckily. It's just going through the rigours of the training and the filming, so sore legs, a cut finger, bruises, but nothing major. I remember one time I was standing there getting ready for a take and one of the stuntmen looked over and said: "Keanu" and I said: "Yeah?" and he was like "...the blood?" and I looked down and had blood pouring off my thumb, and I'm like "Oh... okay. Can we tape that?" And so they taped it, it was just funny because I didn't even know. But we're trying to do some stuff that's never been done, and hopefully people will like it.
