It might not have been critically lauded, but the box office loved Martin Lawrence in "Big Momma's House". First released on DVD in 2001, it's now also available as a DVD movie double bill with Lawrence's most recent comedy extravaganza, "Black Knight".
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture You can see every ripple of prosthetic blubber in this sharp picture transfer, so don't go worrying yourself.
Sound The 5.1 mix is kept busy bass-wise with a suitably funky music score that keeps the subwoofer in work.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary Director Raja Gosnell and producer David Friendly chat about the making of a movie Raja perhaps wasn't entirely sure of. He reveals that he dropped an animated sequence as, "it worked too well and promised a really funny film." If you're an owner of the "Scooby-Doo" live-action DVD; you'll know that Raja dropped the animated opening for that film, too.
Martin Lawrence apparently needed very little direction, and spent most of the shoot ad-libbing like crazy. As he had to wear a huge latex suit he heated up pretty quick, but had his own cool air tent with an oversized chair so that he could recover between takes.
Building Big Momma A one-line description of the movie was all it took for producer David Friendly to sign on the dotted line. He proudly reveals this fact in a 22-minute look behind-the-scenes of a film that required a fair amount of technical expertise in the make-up stakes.
Deleted Scenes Two deleted scenes are available on this DVD, with or without commentary. One of them is the animated title sequence.
Outtakes These six minutes of outtakes have been generated not so much by Lawrence fluffing his lines, but by his endless ad-libbing.
Additional Extra Features Also included on this DVD is an early make-up test, two music videos, a trailer, and a TV spot.
