DVDs to Look Out For in 2003

There are some great DVDs coming your way in 2003. Just remember, though, that all details are subject to change. We've listed the DVDs by distributor...

20TH CENTURY FOX

Fox highlights for January include "Don't Say a Word", "Kung Pow: Enter the Fist", and a very special UK release of "24 Hour Party People" (read our exclusive disc review here). The big exciting title for February is "Dog Soldiers", which regular readers of DVD Week will know is set to be packed with extra features. Also out in February is the popular horror flick "Roadkill".

ANCHOR BAY

The year kicks off in gory style with a fully uncut release for Dario Argento's stunning "Tenebrae", which restores cuts made on the US DVD. Also out in January is Umberto Lenzi's "Nightmare City". As any true zombie aficionado will know, the zombies in that film break into full pelt runs and use weapons, so let's not be hearing any more about "28 Days Later" being the first to do this! Another cult classic to make its DVD debut later this year is... Wes Craven's "The Last House on the Left". No need to buy any more car boot sale tapes for that one then!

BUENA VISTA/DISNEY

There's something for everyone in the Buena Vista schedule for 2003. February sees such romantic fun as "Kate & Leopold" (check out our exclusive disc review, "The Count of Monte Cristo", and animated family fun in "101 Dalmatians II".

March sees "Lilo & Stitch", "The Musketeer", and a two-disc special edition of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" - the US release will apparently only be a one-discer, although we don't know yet what that means in terms of special features.

Tentative rumoured titles for April include "Dragonfly", "Bad Company", and the Bruckheimer DVD collection (seven of Jerry's action-packed films on a ten-disc set).

"Spy Kids 2" heads up May, along with an eight-disc Bruce Willis collection.

For June such diverse entertainment as "Reign of Fire", "Insomnia", and "The Importance of Being Earnest" will vie for your attention.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR

All Columbia is letting slip for next year is that it has "Men in Black II" out on 24th January, and "xXx" on 24th March.

ENTERTAINMENT IN VIDEO

EiV has some rather cool titles coming up in 2003, including a two-disc special edition of "The Crow" in January, plus "Jason X".

February sees the delayed "Monster's Ball" come to disc, while March is headlined by "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". April opens rudely with "Boat Trip".

Looking way into the future, May sees "They", while July is apparently the release month for "Gangs of New York"! Also out that month is "S1m0ne" and "About Schmidt". Finally, expect "Final Destination 2" in August. Now how's that for a schedule?

HONG KONG LEGENDS

Some legendary cult classics get the Hong Kong Legends treatment in 2003. These include "God of Gamblers" in March; "A Better Tomorrow 2" in June, the ferocious "Bullet in the Head" in September, and the highly influential "A Chinese Ghost Story" in October.

METRO TARTAN

A scary start to the new year is in store from Metro Tartan, which has "The Eye" out in January. February sees "Dog Days" and "The Fourth Man", while "ivans xtc" headlines April. Titles due out with no fixed date are more Ingmar Bergman titles, including "Persona"; more François Truffaut films, including "Shoot the Pianist"; more Takashi Miike; plus "Tokyo Story" and "My Kingdom".

MGM

January is a quiet month for MGM but don't miss the gritty classic "Kes", an Oscar-winning Jessica Lange in "Blue Sky", and the 90s version of "Of Mice and Men" with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise.

February hots up with special edition treatment for John Woo's "Windtalkers" and the now classic comedy "A Fish Called Wanda" (read our exclusive disc review).

MOMENTUM

2003 for Momentum includes the long awaited special edition of "The Doors" in February, and a two-disc edition of horror flick "My Little Eye". For that title, Momentum is mysteriously promising "groundbreaking" extra features. It's also currently working on securing exclusive material for the release of "Bowling for Columbine".

PARAMOUNT

The release schedule for Paramount starts to warm up in February with "The Sum of all Fears", which includes a commentary from Tom Clancy. A very special edition of "Sunset Boulevard" is out in March, while April sees "K-19: The Widowmaker". Ben Affleck and Samuel L Jackson will be "Changing Lanes" in May.

Expect to see "Star Trek: Nemesis" in July, and "Jackass: The Movie" in August. Plus, there's a rumoured December release date for "Tomb Raider 2".

UNIVERSAL

Firm dates for any Universal blockbusters for 2003 seem a little thin on the ground, but Matt Damon's "The Bourne Identity" is out in March. What Universal does have firm plans for is a nice chunk of back catalogue.

This includes "Twister" enhanced edition; "Dante's Peak", "Ed TV" enhanced edition, and "Liar Liar" enhanced edition for February.

14th April sees a huge slew of titles coming out, including "Always", "Battlestar Galactica", "Beethoven" and "Beethoven's 2nd", "The Best Man", "Bird on a Wire", "The Boxer", "Bulletproof", "Darkman", "Day of the Jackal", "Dragonheart 2", "Dudley Do Right", "The Eiger Sanction", "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", "In the Name of the Father", "The Jerk", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Legal Eagles", "Mad Dog and Glory", "One True Thing", "Parenthood", "Play Misty for Me", "The River", "The Secret of My Success", "The Shadow", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Uncle Buck", "Rumble Fish", "Wild at Heart", "Village of the Dammed", "The War", "Car Wash", "Dazed and Confused", and "Repo Man". Phew!

May is going to be a great month for westerns, with the following out on the 19th: "Joe Kidd", "The Man from the Alamo", "The Spoilers", "Ulzana's Raid", "The Virginian", "The War Wagon", "High Plains Drifter", and "Rooster Cogburn". Also out the same day are "Charade" and "The Mummy".

WARNER BROS

A typically busy Warner Bros schedule promises a tasty 2003. "Murder by Numbers" is out in January, while February sees "Eight Legged Freaks" crawl onto disc.

March gets busy with "Swimfan" splashing onto DVD along with "Pluto Nash" and "Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood".

Back catalogue titles for that month include "Masters of the Universe", David Lean's "Hobson's Choice", and "The Sound Barrier".

Other Brit films to be released include Alistair Sim's "School for Scoundrels" and "The Green Man"; Tony Hancock in "The Rebel" and "The Punch and Judy Man", plus kids' classics "The Railway Children" and "Swallows and Amazons".

April opens with "Sweet Sixteen", "The Powderpuff Girls", "Adam's Rib", and a new Ealing comedy gift set which will feature an additional documentary. Also, watch out around Easter time for... "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".

"Anita & Me" headlines May, which also includes a Barbra Streisand boxset, plus a two-disc release for "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves".

June will see the special edition treatment for "Highlander", "The Mission", and... "Once Upon a Time in America". Also out that month is "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", "Death in Venice", "The Color Purple", and Jennifer Lopez's "Selena".
