Ben Stiller - writer, director, and star of "Zoolander" - is on hand throughout the DVD to explain what he was trying to achieve.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture Bright, clashing colours fill the screen and the quality transfer copes with all of them perfectly.
Sound An energetic bass-laden 5.1 mix pumps out the pop tunes with gusto and enhances the gags with some neat directional effects.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary Writer, director, and star Ben Stiller is joined by co-writers Drake Sather and John Hamburg. The tone is earnest, as the structure of the film both in script and editing stages is deconstructed in minute detail.
Ben is very much the man in charge and he's clearly serious about the comedy he produces. Occasional points are raised about the test audiences shattering the teams' ideas of what's funny and what's not and how, in just a few seconds, years of thinking a specific way are brought to an abrupt halt. Don't expect many laughs from this commentary.
Deleted Scenes Five moderately funny scenes are presented here with an optional commentary from Stiller. The footage includes an improvised interview with Moby, whom Stiller considers very funny, but had to remove from the movie.
Extended Scenes Five extended shavings get an optional analysis from Stiller. Some of them are so short he barely has time to finish what he's saying. But it's worth seeking out the extra 'funny walks' scene.
Outtakes At six minutes long this is a long run time for outtakes - they could do with some serious editing. Endless line fluffs become a bit wearing after a while but there's about two minutes of fun to be wrung out of this.
VH1 Fashion Awards Two short skits of Derek Zoolander at the 1996 and 1997 VH1 Fashion Awards offer you a chance to see the birth of the character. It's funny material, and sharper than most of the movie.
Promo Spots 15 TV teasers are yours to flick through and there's some keenly observed spoofing of MTV culture going on here.
Alternative End Title Sequence The film ends with a near conventional credits sequence. But here's what was originally planned to top the film with. It's all flashy graphics and looks good but unfortunately works more like an opening sequence, hence perhaps why they were dropped.
