Snow Dogs DVD (2002)

Cuba Gooding Jr and James Coburn get upstaged by eight mutts in the likeable family comedy "Snow Dogs", which tears onto DVD with some mildly entertaining features.

Picture Icy whites and blues make up much of the palette, and these sharp tones are transferred to DVD with typical Disney precision.

Sound Silly sound effects and plenty of bass complete a lively 5.1 mix that's out to accentuate the gags wherever possible.

Audio Commentary Director Brian Levant and producer Jordan Kerner get together for a commentary that certainly tackles each scene as they come up, but is surprisingly empty of detail. Levant is a highly enthusiastic speaker, but at times this gets a little grating and it's hard to know what kids who've bought the film would find to enjoy in this track.

Going to the Dogs Perhaps the most surprising fact to be gleaned from this 12-minute commentary is that the 12 dogs used in the film were domestic canines. Two weeks were put aside to teach them before they had to start mushing, and you can see some behind-the-scenes action here of the actors trying to retain some form of control over them.

Chillin' with the Characters The actors take out six minutes to chat about the characters they play, and while hardly exciting there's a little footage of Cuba playing about on set, if that rings your bell.

Tolketna on Ice A suitable alternative, although admittedly clumsy alternative title for this would be "Three Minute Featurette where LA People Moan about Working in the Cold".

Ted's Arctic Challenge This is an interactive game, which may please adults as they try to dodge obstacles on a snowmobile but any console-aware kid will scoff at.

Deleted Scenes More like deleted shavings than actual scenes, but amongst the four moments here is Cuba Gooding Jr asking "Show me the mushy!" He's one krayzee dude, that Cuba.

Extended Scenes Five more shavings await you here.
