The BBC's flagship film programme first hit the air in November 1971, the year cinema-goers could see Sean Connery as Bond in "Diamonds are Forever".
It was presented by Jacky Gillott and initially only shown in London and the South-East.
Before Jonathan Ross took over in 1999, Barry Norman was the BBC's face of film for 26 years.
The show has had several other guest presenters, including Michael Parkinson and Russell Harty.
The Film 2003 theme music is "I Wish I Knew (How it Would Feel to be Free)" by the Billy Taylor Trio.
Over the years guests have included Sir David Lean, Orson Welles, Gregory Peck, Sophia Loren, Sir Alec Guinness, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ingrid Bergman, Jack Nicholson... the list is (almost) endless.
Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe and George Clooney have been among Jonathan's recent star guests and he has also presented the BAFTAs and the BBC's Oscar coverage.
Behind the scenes there's a team of film buffs working away. Series producer Tom Webber's name first appeared on the show in 1979 when he won a competition to identify three sports stars turned film actors. One of them was OJ Simpson...
Favourite films of members of the production team include "North by NorthWest", "Dawn of the Dead", "Jacob's Ladder", "The 39 Steps" (1935 version) and "Spartacus".
Least favourite suggestions include "Batman and Robin", "Mary Reilly", "Joe Versus the Volcano" and "Black Hawk Down".
