Mulholland Drive DVD (2002)

Welcome once again to the recesses of David Lynch's ever-bizarre mind with the twisting "Mulholland Drive", out on a suitably strange DVD.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture The quality of the film transfer to disc is good, even if the visions you see are far from clear in what they all actually mean.

Sound Billed as 5.1, this is a sound mix that's not short on bass, even if the rear speakers are left with nothing to do.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Cast and Crew Interviews David Lynch may not reputedly be keen on doing audio commentaries for his films, but he should perhaps consider offering an alternative to the promotional three-minute interview clip that's on this DVD. He touches very briefly on the narrative structure of the film, on the characters, "dealing with the question of identity", and on his love of LA - but you'll learn nothing of substance.

There are also very short interviews with Justin Theroux, Naomi Watts, and Laura Harring, but as all they do is gush about Lynch, you'll soon find yourself reaching for the stop button.

Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD is a trailer, cast and crew biographies, and filmographies. Don't bother looking for a scene selection menu, as there isn't one. Lynch apparently doesn't believe in chaptering his movies, but he should perhaps consider re-assessing his approach to the DVD format overall, as this is a frustrating disc. The one solace is a tip sheet that gives you ten pointers to understanding the film.
